'the Biggest Loser''s Jillian Michaels: I Can Break Them Down
When "The Biggest Loser" returns for its eighth season on Sept. 15, The Game will be slightly changed. The competition will still be stiff between the 16 contestants, but trainers Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper will be working together, not overseeing individual teams. No more blue team vs. black team. "One of my favorite parts of working with Bob is -- and this is an analogy that I used -- we are like two leopards on the Serengeti and they are a herd. I am, 'Okay, I am going to split off this one and destroy them and Bob can wrangle the herd,'" Jillian says, explaining the advantage of the partnership. "Unfortunately, when we have teams, we don't have time to do that deeper work, because I don't have him training my other five contestants so I can destroy someone and break them down and get to the root of the issue." Bob agrees that it is important for them to get to the "why" with their overeaters, so that when they return home -- the place where they packed on the pounds in the first place -- the "Losers" have developed some tools to help them not gain the weight back. He thinks that the chance to have one-on-one time is an advantage. "Jillian is my No. 1 confidante," Bob says. "She is the one I can go to, but in seasons past, you never really saw that. Now you see our two forces joined together and I really think there was magic there." This season's theme is "Second Chances," and it is something that resonates with both trainers. "We have these contestants who have been to hell and back to be quite frank," Jillian says. "I think the most extreme is a woman [Abby] who lost her whole family in a car wreck. The idea is: How do we heal these old injuries and rehabilitate these contestants? Not just physically, but emotionally. We talk about diet and exercise, but the philosophy of the show has always been about life. …I want to get the message to America that we can turn any tragedy into a triumph with the right skill set and mind frame." "The Biggest Loser" returns Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 8 p.m. on NBC.[Read full story on The Insider]
