Kate Gosselin On Broken Marriage: 'something Had To Give'
Kate Gosselin delivered a raw and emotional interview on Monday night's TLC special, "Kate: Her Story," talking about the paparazzi, infidelity rumors in the tabloids, and telling NBC's Natalie Morales about her broken marriage with Jon Gosselin, "Whatever happened, it happened so quickly. … Something had to give." The "Jon & Kate Plus 8" star has been the subject of a media frenzy and harsh tabloid scrutiny since news broke that she and Jon were divorcing, and she revealed how it went from love to lawsuits. "Things got really bad -- really bad," she said. "I looked at [Jon] and he looked at me and we were completely different people. "Our goals just very much changed. Our visions changed," she continued, saying that Jon's goals felt "possibly detrimental to me and the kids." Often guarded in the interview, she did not elaborate as to why his goals would be harmful. Asked if their marriage would have survived had they not decided to do "Jon & Kate Plus 8," she replied, "From my viewpoint, had we never done the show, we would have been struggling [with our jobs] and that would've gotten the best of us sooner or later." Kate said the decision to divorce was "a very mutually agreed-upon thing," but when it came to breaking the news to their eight young children, "That was a rough one." She said she has a "hate-hate" relationship with the paparazzi, and the endless parade of tabloid magazine covers can be "hurtful." "I signed up for a reality show; I didn't sign up to be a tabloid staple," she said. "I can't control the lies and untruths that are out there. … I'm trying to do the best with the current situation for my kids." Asked to set the record straight on infidelity rumors with her bodyguard, Kate replied, "It is so unthinkable to me -- to have to think about it makes me sick." She added, "[That Jon] fans it into this huge tabloid nightmare is disgusting to me. … One day it suit his needs to turn the spotlight off his bad behavior and turn it on me." When it came to seeing Jon in the tabloids with other women, she said, "Did it shock me? Yes. It was not the person that I knew." She used the words "angry and hurt," and when asked about Jon's relationship with Hailey Glassman, she said, "It's another one of the things that I'm dealing with." The estranged couple are still the parents of eight kids, however, and she said that she and Jon do communicate "where it relates to the kids," often texting each other. "We always are going to be their parents; in terms of dating, I never ever broach the subject with him." Does she still love Jon? "A part of me always will," she says. "I love the memories that we have together. The good times." As for the future of their show, Kate said that she'd love to continue filming with the kids, who "miss the fun," but she'd consider her own reality series with TLC.
