Globes Return To Salute Underdogs
Mon, 12 Jan 2009 07:29:28 | Rate news: +0
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association shared the wealth at the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles Sunday night, with underdog indie 'Slumdog Millionaire' and underdog 'Wrestler' Mickey Rourke as just two of the night's surprise winners. CLICK HERE for the complete list! After last year's gala celebration was sidelined by the WGA strike, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association put together a fun, light and often surprising show at The Beverly Hilton, with memorable moments including a standing ovation for Steven Spielberg, a heroic comeback for Rourke, a friendly upset victory over Meryl Streep, a double victory for Kate Winslet and an emotional, posthumous acting award for Heath Ledger. Director Danny Boyle's story of an Indian teen in love and on the verge of winning India's version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire," 'Slumdog Millionaire' upset 'Revolutionary Road, 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,' 'Frost/Nixon' and 'The Reader' to win the title of Best Motion Picture – Drama. It also hit the jackpot with awards for Best Director (Boyle), Best Screenplay (Simon Beaufoy) and Best Original Score (A.R. Rahman). In the Best Motion Picture -- Musical or Comedy category, Woody Allen's 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona' bested 'Burn After Reading,' 'Mamma Mia!,' 'In Bruges' and 'Happy-Go-Lucky.' At the beginning of the night, Winslet first earned the statuette for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her performance in 'The Reader.' "You'll have to forgive me, I have a habit of not winning things," she told the crowd. "I'm in shock." She thanked her family, fellow filmmakers and fellow nominees Amy Adams, Penelope Cruz, Viola Davis and Marisa Tomei. But after winning the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, the 'Revolutionary Road' star became overwhelmed. "Is this really happening?" she asked, needing a moment to collect herself. Beating out Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie, Meryl Streep and Kristin Scott Thomas, she proclaimed, "This is absolutely extraordinary" and thanked "two incredible men who are such special people in my world: [Leonardo DiCaprio], I'm so happy I can stand here and tell you how much I love you, and how much I've loved you for 13 years. My husband [Sam Mendes], thank you for directing this film, babe, and thank you for killing us every single day." Making a serious comeback in the final round, 'The Wrestler' star Rourke was named Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama, pinning opponents Frank Langella, Brad Pitt, DiCaprio and Sean Penn. "It's been a very, very long road back for me," he admitted. "Several years ago I was almost out of this business." He thanked song contributors Bruce Springsteen and Axl Rose, his dogs and director Darren Aronofsky, who "brought the best out of me; he's smarter than the rest of us." Colin Farrell stole the statuette for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for his comic turn as a hit man in 'In Bruges.' Up against Javier Bardem, Dustin Hoffman, James Franco and co-star Brendan Gleeson, he joked, "They must have done the counting in Florida -- an absolute shock, truly," adding, "Brendan, this is at least half of yours; I'll cut it when I get offstage and at least you'll get a hemisphere." A surprised Sally Hawkins won the statuette for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy for her upbeat performance in 'Happy-Go-Lucky.' Tearing up, she acknowledged "today's exceptionally phenomenal goddesses" -- upsetting fellow nominees Streep, Emma Thompson, Frances McDormand and Rebecca Hall – and said, "This seems insane when I'm up here and you're all in the room. … This is extraordinary." Heath Ledger was honored posthumously for his memorable turn as the villain Joker in 'The Dark Knight,' up against such talented Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture competition as Robert Downey Jr., Tom Cruise, Ralph Fiennes and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Accepting on Heath's behalf, Batman director Chris Nolan said that the late actor has earned "an incredible place in the history of cinema that he built for himself," adding, "All of us who worked with Heath on 'The Dark Knight' accept this with a sadness, but an incredible pride. … He will be eternally missed but he will never be forgotten." On the TV side, "30 Rock" rolled with three major wins: Best TV Series – Musical or Comedy, Best Actress Tina Fey and Best Actor Alec Baldwin. Co-star Tracy Morgan accepted the show's award for all onstage, saying, "Tina Fey and I had an agreement that if Barack Obama won, I would speak for the show from now on." Tina, who was up against Christina Applegate, America Ferrera, Debra Messing and Mary Louise Parker, said, "I'm really lucky to have the year I've had this year, [and] if you ever start feeling really good about yourself, you have the Internet." Baldwin bested Steve Carell, Kevin Connolly, David Duchovny and Tony Shalhoub and exclaimed, "Thank you Tina thank you Tina thank you Tina," adding with a quip about this year's Miss Golden Globe Rumer Willis, "I feel so old; I remember I used to bring [her] a juice box on the set." In the drama department, "Mad Men" sipped a victory martini as Best TV Series – Drama, beating out "Dexter," "House," "True Blood" and "In Treatment." Gabriel Byrne walked away with the Best Actor in a TV Series – Drama award for his therapeutic role in "In Treatment," up against such heavyweights as Hugh Laurie, Jon Hamm, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Michael C. Hall, while Anna Paquin trumped the competition with her surprise win as Best Actress in a TV Series -- Drama for her prescient role in "True Blood," besting Sally Field, January Jones, Kyra Sedgwick and Mariska Hargitay. The historical biographical miniseries of founding father "John Adams" also walked away with several honors Sunday night: As Best Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for TV (co-executive produced by Tom Hanks); Laura Linney, as Abigail Adams, won Best Actress in the same category; Tom Wilkinson's portrayal of Benjamin Franklin earned him a Best Supporting Actor honor in the same category; and Paul Giamatti nabbed his first-ever Golden Globe statuette as the title character, saying, "This was a heckuva job, this little costume drama we put on." Other key winners of the night included 'WALL-E,' which picked up the Outstanding Animated Feature award; Israel's 'Waltz with Bashir' got Best Foreign Film; Bruce Springsteen won the statuette for his Best Original Song contribution to 'The Wrestler'; Laura Dern won Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Made-for-TV movie for her turn in the political docudrama 'Recount'; and Steven Spielberg was honored with the special Cecil B. DeMille award -- and a standing ovation -- for his achievements, presented by friend Martin Scorsese. Star presenters included Johnny Depp, Zac Efron, Sandra Bullock, Seth Rogen, Jennifer Lopez, Jake Gyllenhaal, Pierce Brosnan, Sting, Eva Longoria, Rene Zellweger, The Jonas Brothers, Cameron Diaz, Mark Wahlberg, Drew Barrymore, Demi Moore, Aaron Eckhart, Kate Beckinsale, Don Cheadle, Patrick Dempsey and Eva Mendes.
