The Grammys: Music's Biggest Night!
There was music and magic in the air at the 51st annual Grammy Awards, as artists came together to rock out at the Staples Center in Los Angeles -- and "The Insider" was there! Robert Plant and Alison Krauss scored an incredible night, with their raw and eclectic collaboration project Raising Sand winning Album of the Year and their songs "Please Read The Letter" and "Rich Woman" winning Record of the Year and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, respectively. "I'm bewildered," said the former Led Zeppelin frontman. "In the old days we would have called this selling out, but it's a good way to spend a Sunday." An emotional Jennifer Hudson picked up the first award of the night, Best R&B Album for her self-titled debut, and she exclaimed, "I would like to thank God who has brought me through; I would like to thank my family in heaven," referencing her late mother, brother and nephew who were tragically murdered last October. Coldplay was another big winner of the night, picking up Song of the Year ("Viva La Vida") and Best Rock Album (Viva La Vida). After picking up their second trophy, the band's colorfully dressed frontman Chris Martin told the crowd, "We've never had so many Grammys in our life. We feel so grateful to be here. I'm going to tear up." Other big awards went to Lil' Wayne, who earned Best Rap Album for Tha Carter III; Adele was voted Best New Artist; Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group went to Sugarland's "Stay"; and John Mayer won Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for his song "Say." As always with music's biggest night, the night was fueled by some spectacular performances featuring an eclectic mixture of artists in often unexpected pairings: U2 kicked off the celebration with their energetic new hit, "Sexy Boots"; Justin Timberlake, Boyz II Men and Al Green collaborated on Green's classic tune, "Let's Stay Together"; Coldplay delivered a buoyant version of their "Viva La Vida"; Kid Rock rocked out with a trio of tunes: "Amen," "All Summer Long" and "Rock n Roll Jesus"; Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus performed together for the first time onstage, singing Taylor's "Fifteen"; the Jonas Brothers and Stevie Wonder shared vocals on each others' "Burning Up" and "Superstition"; descending onto the stage in a giant banana, Katy Perry belted out "I Kissed a Girl"; Estelle and Kanye West paired up for their "American Boy"; Kenny Chesney crooned "Better as a Memory"; Paul McCartney, with the Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl on drums, sang the Beatles hit "I Saw Her Standing There"; Sugarland sang "Stay" followed by Adele's "Chasing Pavements"; T.I. with Timberlake rocked and rapped "Dead and Gone"; Neil Diamond performed his classic sing-along song "Sweet Caroline"; Robert Plant and Alison Krauss performed a haunting, pitch-perfect "Rich Woman" and "Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)" and more. Other memorable moments of the night included Radiohead's percussive performance of "Fifteen Steps" accompanied by the USC marching band; the extremely pregnant mom-to-be M.I.A. prowling around the stage with "The Rap Pack" -- Kanye, T.I., Lil' Wayne and Jay-Z -- belting out "Swagger Like Us"; the appearance of a ravishing-looking Whitney Houston and a healthy-looking Natalie Cole onstage as presenters; a reunited Blink-182, with Travis Barker wearing a sling on his arm, stating, "We used to play music together, and we decided to play music together again"; Smokey Robinson, Jamie Foxx and Ne-Yo teaming up with surviving Four Tops member Duke Fakir to sing their classic Motown hits "Reach Out (I'll Be There)" and "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)"; and Jennifer Hudson's performance of "You Pulled Me Through," with a gospel choir behind her, fighting back tears after the last note.
