Hollywood star Patrick Swayze is fighting pancreatic cancer, his doctor confirmed last night. But claims that the 55-year-old actor had just five weeks left to live were denied by Dr George Fisher, who said Mr Swayze was responding well to treatment. The star, most famous for roles in Dirty Dancing and Ghost, is working on upcoming TV and film projects while battling one of the most deadly forms of cancer.

Sufferers of pancreatic cancer typically have a survival rate of less than five per cent.

"Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far," Dr Fisher said last night in a statement.

"All of the reports stating the timeframe of his prognosis and his physical side effects are absolutely untrue. We are considerably more optimistic."

He added: "Patrick is continuing his normal schedule during this time, which includes working on upcoming projects.
