Despite 50 years of faithful service, William - affectionately known as Backstairs Billy because he was Page Of The Backstairs - was abruptly laid off after the death of the queen mother five years ago.

But Charles has not forgotten the 70-year-old former aide and made a trip to London's St Mary's Hospital to wish Billy a speedy recovery.
