This Colombian-American singer-songwriter has the gift of song and fight. Blending all the styles that she grew up with, from cumbia and rock to flamenco and R&B, she's part of a new generation of Latina musicians pushing the genre forward.

Why we know her?
With a Latin Grammy for Best Songwriting in hand, Soraya's career, spanning four albums, is bathing in recognition. But she's also a hero of sorts, spearheading a campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer in Latin women, a disease she survived.

Born in Point Pleasant, New Jersey to a Colombian family. Raised in Colombia for many years before returning to the United States. She is the only member of her family who is a United States citizen.

2004 recipient of Billboard Magazine's "Spirit of Hope" Award for her tireless work to raise awareness on the prevention and cure of breast cancer in the Hispanic community.

Retired from the entertainment business to devote herself and her health to her much publicized battle with breast cancer in 2003. She was actively involved with the Susan Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Was one of the first artists to compose and record in both English and Spanish.

Singer who won won a Latin Grammy for best female album and a Billboard Latin Music Spirit of Hope award in 2004.

Her mother, grandmother, and aunt all died of breast cancer, as well.

Attended Rutgers University in New Jersey, where she studied English literature, French philosophy and women's studies.

Was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer in June 2000.
