Shot by Tyra Bank’s favourite (as she keeps reminding us) photographer Giles Bensimon Mandy Moore looks gorgeous on the May cover of Elle.  Next month, Many is coming back with her 1st album in 4 years, Wild Hope, with the track, ‘Extraordinary’ as her 1st single.  Mandy co-wrote all of her newest material with Rachael Yamagata who has written songs that have featured on Nip/Tuck and The OC amongs others as well as lending her vocals to Ray Lamontagne and Ryan Adams tracks.  Warner Bros wanted Moore to go with ‘proven commodities who had written megahits with, say Ashlee Simpson and Kelly Clarson..[she] tried it.  It didn’t work for her.  “What’s the point of getting ongstage and singing music my heart wasn’t behind anymore…I migh as well sing karaoke in a hotel bar”.

So Mandy left Warner Bros and allowed her own management company to release her new album on their record label

“I don’t want any expectations…I just want people to know that I still sing.  Most people don’t realise that, or else they hate my music - rightfully so [referring to her past musical endeavours a la Candy]”

In a world of Lindsay Lohans and Nicole Ritchies, Moore comes acoss as refreshingly down to earth:

“She rarely drinks, hates going to clubs, is always in bed early, claims to have never tried any sort of drug (”I have a fear of being out of control and I’m not a rule breaker”, she says), and admits her main vices are shopping and heavy TiVo usage…her two brothers share her Los Eliz home

Quizzed on what she thought her place was among the Britneys, Christinas and Jessicas of the late 1990’s,

“Moore finishes her bite of oatmeal firttata, pauses to consider the question then cheerfully plunges this verbal dagger into herself:  “I’m sure I was viewed as the young untalented one”

As to what she thinks her forte is, singing or acting she responds,

“I’m mediocre at both”, she chirps.  “I’m not trying to come across as self-deprecating.  I’m just being honest”

Much has been made of Mandy’s revelations that she had expierenced some periods of depression;

“Why do I feel so icky?”  Could her moods have been a by-produce of shacking up with an admiteedly gloomy comic actor-director [Zach Braff].  “I don’t thinks so…It’s just a coincidence I think.  The breakup didn’t help but I was already in that place“

Mandy’s close circle don’t appear to be missing Zach Braff’s presence in Mandy’s life:

“Toxic” is the word one Moor friend who’d spent time with the couple uses to describe him:  He’s a really bad combination of narcissistic and insecure“

Mandy, as you would expect isn’t one to badmouth her former beau in a magazine interview,”Out of respect to Zach, who I still consider a friend and care about and suport, I have nothing bad to say about him.  It just didn’t work out”

Though some of her lyrics in her new album speak to a different reality:

You did everything I asked you not to…You said you could be god/But somehow you’re guilty/And you’re not even sorry…I could never do those things you did to me..I hope you burn in hell/Or do I?…And your mistakes will haunt you down eventually”

Mandy also speaks about working in a business where size 0 has become the norm than the exception for women:

“Sometimes I feel fine.  Sometimes I don’t feel so great.  I’m a regular person.  I’m not that thin.  I’m okay with representing a different type than the normal Hollywood beauty ideal.  But other people aren’t so okay with that.  I’ve been told that I have to lose weight for stuff before.  It’s mortifying.  It’sh ard to have someone come up and go, ‘You should lose a few pounds’.  And they don’t say it delicately.  How can you?  It’s only happened to me once before.  But once is enough to make you feel awful”.

After snooping around a little, Elle found that a Warner Bros executive had seen American Dreams and ‘deemed her too round’.  Mandy had to loose a few pounds for her role in License to Wed, this summer’s romaantic comedy with Robin Williams and John Krasinski who plays Jim on the US version of The Office.  After working with Mandy, Krasinski clearly feels that Moore has the potential to become America’s next sweetheart:

“I feel confident that this could be the role…The audience is just going to fall in love with her.  I expected that maybe Mandy was going to be living on her own planet.  She wasn’t at all.  She’s incredibly sweet and smart, and she cares so much.  Nothing’s half-assed with her”

Although naturally beautiful and by all accounts a talented young woman for some reason Mandy has become a target of ridicule on some blogs:

“On a recent trip to paris Moore, unable to sleep, pulled out her laptop and ended up on a blog on which a photo of her was being dissected.  “People are so  mean” she says.  She chronicles the things she read about herself- “She’s fat.  She’s untalented.  I wish sh’ed shut up.  I don’t want to hear another record from her”.  And then Moore did what she’s always done, and the reason we still know her name:  She rose in the morning did her best to forget all those voices and got right back to work”.

Mandy Moore has what a lot of starlutards wandering around coked off their faces lack - likeability.  If you haven’t seen her performance in Saved! with Macaulay Culkin then make an effort to, it’s a genius little film like a darker version of Mean Girls.  And although Moore sometimes comes across as overly self-deprecating, you get the feeling that when she’s an actual genuine person which in her business marks her out as a rarity.
