From her unruly hair to her eclectic sound, Kelis is a woman of her own design. Although her ability to switch effortlessly from one genre to the next has won her legions of fans, it has also confounded critics who have attempted to label her sound. "Am I R&B because I'm black? Am I pop because I have a song called 'Milkshake'? Or can I just be who the hell I am?" she asks, exasperated. At 16, she was accepted as a drama major at New York's renowned La Guardia School for the Arts Her third album, "Tasty," was certified platinum in the UK but not in the US.
