Former American Idol champ Fantasia Barrino has helped give smash hit musical The Color Purple its best week ever after shattering the house record at New York City's Broadway Theater. The spectacular, which features newcomer Barrino among its cast, grossed almost $1.2 million last week, during its 76th week on Broadway.


American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino desperately tried to win the role of Effie White in Dreamgirls and even had co-star Jamie Foxx backing her, before eventually losing out to Jennifer Hudson.

Foxx, who plays record boss Curtis Taylor in the film, was pushing for Barrino to land the role, but director Bill Condon had other ideas.
