He is the great-great-grandson of Theo van Gogh, brother of the famous painter Vincent van Gogh. Victim of a shooting, apparently in response to the film Submission: Part I, which was shown on Dutch television in August 2004. Had a son, Liewe. Van Gogh's death at the hands of a Muslim extremist has sparked a national controversy of Muslim immigrants in The Netherlands Controversial newspaper columnist. A longtime advocate for freedom of speech, he made many enemies on all sides of the political spectrum. In the morning hours of November 2nd, 2004, he was shot, stabbed and killed in a city street in Amsterdam. The killer was arrested by police, after a short manhunt and two shoot-outs in the city, in which a police-officer was also wounded. Was a good friend of the Dutch comedian and actor Hans Teeuwen.
