Sona MacDonald means literally "Happy, Son of Donald" in Irish. MacDonald is an anglicized form of "Mac Domhnall", Son of Donald. In the more traditional sense, a Donald's daughter would be given a name in the style "Ní Dhomhnall" or "Nic Dhomhnall", while his son would be named "Ó Domhnall" or "Mac Domhnall". When Irish and Scottish names were anglicized, the Ó/Mac forms got more recognition and also became familial surnames, thus being now used for both boys and girls.
