President Obama Urges Ioc To Choose Chicago As Host City For 2016 Olympics
President Barack Obama arrived early Friday morning in Copenhagen to deliver a heartfelt pitch for his hometown of Chicago to host the 2016 Olympic Games. His wife, Michelle Obama, dressed in a gold ensemble, delivered a speech as well, ending with, "I brought somebody with me today who knows a little something about change." That was the President's cue to make his valiant effort to convince the International Olympic Committee to select Chicago over Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, and Tokyo, the other cities petitioning for the bid. The President spoke "as a faithful representative of the American people." He explained that he would like to welcome the world "to the shores of Lake Michigan and the heartland of our nation." After a childhood of moving often, he explained that Chicago is "a city where I finally found a home." He made it clear throughout his presentation how much he would like for his city and nation to host this world-class event. Upon settling there, he said, "I came to discover that Chicago is [the] most American of American cities, but one where citizens from more than 130 nations inhabit a rich tapestry of distinctive neighborhoods." The President continued, saying Chicago is "a place where our unity is on colorful display at so many festivals and parades and especially at sporting events, where perfect strangers become fast friends just because they're wearing the same jersey." This is just what the Olympic movement stands to represent. He ended with a touching plea, saying, "There is nothing I would like more than to step just a few blocks from my family's home with Michelle and our two girls and welcome the world back into our neighborhood."[Read full story on The Insider]
