Her father, Fred Mahnken, became the gardener/handyman at the Rooney home in Woodland Hills, California, after she became Mrs. Rooney. Her first husband, Dan Ducich, gambled heavily and complained he owed money to Las Vegas mobsters. He was found dead 21 June 1954 at the Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, an apparent suicide. She moved back to Los Angeles soon after her first marriage ended in divorce in 1952 and, within two months, met Mickey Rooney at the Woodland Hills driving range. She modeled in the nude for photographer Heda Emerson Hall circa 1950. She met her first husband, Dan Ducich (c. 1928-1954), a college basketball player, in Compton, California, but he took her to live in Butte, Montana, after their marriage.
