Donna Summer newsDonna Summer's Daughter Follows In Her Footsteps
Amanda Sudano-Ramirez is the spitting image of her mom -- legendary '70s singer and disco queen Donna Summer -- who is best known for her hit song, "Last Dance." Now Amanda is following in her mom's footsteps -- and "The Insider" is with Amanda and her band Johnnyswim at the Roxy in Los Angeles. "It was like my big rebellion not to do music, so I was, 'I'm going to go to college,'" Amanda says. "I was going to be in the music business but I wasn't necessarily going to perform myself. So the whole time I'm going to college, she's like, 'So you writing any songs? You know you're just going to end up singing, so I don't know why you're wasting your time.' But obviously she supported me going to college." Amanda also has the complete support of her father Bruce Sudano, who is Donna's manager and husband of 29-years. "They were always kind of supportive and it's almost like they expected [it] out of us because we all were kind of creative and sang constantly," Amanda adds. Unlike her mom, Amanda, who also has a successful modeling career, is not going it solo. She and husband Abner Ramirez formed Johnnyswim, which recently performed at the Roxy in Hollywood. "I had no idea who Donna Summer was when I started dating Amanda," Abner admits. "I liked [Amanda] so I figured if we wrote songs together, the best way to write more songs together was to be in a band together." So what kind of music do they make? "I would say our influences are a mix of everything from soul to… I was singing Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan all day today and that kind of tends to happen; then other days it's all Sam Cooke. I think all those influences come out but, ultimately, I think it's pop, soul, acoustic and rock." Working together and being married means Amanda and Abner spend a lot of time together, but so far it hasn't presented any challenges. "We've been two peas in a pod from the jump, so it's never been a problem hanging out and spending all this time together," Abner tells "The Insider." "We are good at giving each other space when we feel like somebody needs it." To contact Johnnyswim for booking, go to johnnyswim.com. Idol Does Disco, Some Boogie Better Than Others
It was back to the old American Idol ball game Tuesday, with all four judges getting to on each performance-which was great for some and not at all good for others-as the still intact Top Seven waded through the sounds of Studio 54, Saturday Night Fever and Donna Summer's greatest hits. Meaning, they sang disco-era tunes. Best of all, besides the musical magic worked here and there, there were no lengthy interludes between performances.
