When her 1980 song "If You Ever Change Your Mind" was Grammy-nominated in the Best Country Vocal Performance category, the singer found herself competing (same category) with Sissy Spacek who was nominated for title song from Coal Miner's Daughter (1980), the acclaimed biopic in which Spacek portrayed Gayle's real-life sister Loretta Lynn
Was inducted into the Native American Hall of Fame in 2001. She is of Tsalagi (Cherokee) ancestry.
Aunt of Patsy Lynn and Peggy Lynn.
