Is one of five African-American actresses to win the Oscar in a competitive category. The others, in chronological order, are Hattie McDaniel for Gone with the Wind (1939), Whoopi Goldberg for Ghost (1990), Halle Berry for Monster's Ball (2001) and Jennifer Hudson for Dreamgirls (2006).

The outfit she wore to the Oscars in 2010, the year she won for Best Supporting Actress, was inspired by what Hattie McDaniel, the first African-American Oscar winner, wore to the Oscar ceremony in 1940, the year in which she also won for Best Supporting Actress.

Brother Gerald Imes publicly apologized to her on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" (1986) for molesting his sister when they were children. He revealed during his appearance that he himself was molested and was drinking alcohol and using drugs by the time he was 11 and that he started to molest Mo'Nique when he was 13 and she was 7/8 for about a year.
