Lisa Niemi was candid with Oprah about her husband Patrick Swayze's recent death, and their life together on Friday's live episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show." Lisa told Oprah that Patrick was given three months or less to live when he was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer two years ago, but managed to hang on for 22 months. Lisa explained that she only allowed herself to cry one time in front of Patrick, when he was first diagnosed: "When we first had the diagnosis, I cried in front of him. I said, this is the one time I'm going to do this. ... When he looked at me and looked in my eyes, I wanted him to know he was going to be OK, no matter what. ... Both of us had to deal with this illness but he's the one that was going to pay the ultimate price." When it came to life after death, Lisa said of Patrick, "He also had this very realistic side, where he said I can't be 100 percent sure, but I'm gonna find out." She said that when he passed away on September 14, he was "very comfortable" and that she was so glad that she was by his side at the end: "I was afraid to leave his side and luckily I was so happy I was there." And she said that since the death of her husband of 34 years, she still feels him around her, saying, "I could so easily feel every contour of his hand in mine." In terms of what lessons she has learned from the experience, she told Oprah, "You end up living a lot more in the moment... you realize that we don't have anybody for long and we don't even have our own lives for long." And when it came to Patrick as a husband and partner, Lisa said, "I've been really blessed to have a man who always believed in me and who thought I was smart and beautiful and good and all these wonderful and I hope I can continue to prove him right, that he was right about me, how about that?"

Reuters - "Dirty Dancing" star Patrick Swayze's widow, Lisa Niemi, said that even though her husband's battle with cancer lasted nearly two years, that did not prepare her for his death in September.
Lisa Niemi, the widow of Patrick Swayze, spoke about dealing with the loss of her husband at California First Lady Maria Shriver's Women's Conference on Tuesday. Niemi joined Elizabeth Edwards and Susan Saint James on a panel moderated by Shriver called "Grief, Healing & Resilience." Elizabeth Edwards lost her son, Wade when he was 16, while Saint James' son Teddy passed away at age 14. Shriver's mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, and her uncle, Ted Kennedy, both passed away in recent months. Niemi said about the grieving process, "I never knew what to say to people who lost somebody and, boy, I have a good idea about it now." She explained that having girlfriends who she can call at any time of the day or night has helped her deal with losing her husband of 34 years: "Sometimes just the act of reaching out helps to ground and connect you back to life and love and other people." Niemi said of Swayze, "Cancer may have taken him but it never beat him." She said that part of the grieving process has been dealing with regrets and beating herself up over the little things. She told the panel, "I've spent two thirds of my life with him. ... My regret is that I didn't tell him that I loved him enough over that entire 34 years. ... I am so grateful for what I had and my connection to him, and part of me believes that I will see him again and I'm just going to have to go on until then." She said that appearing on the conference has a way for her to try to help others in her position: "For me to learn to reach out and connect with other people was a huge thing, and it enriches the whole tapestry of life when you connect with other people." Edwards, who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, says that she doesn't fear death, in part, because, "For me it's not as scary in part because I have to believe that there's a chance of reunion of some sort with Wade so death offers me that, which life doesn't offer me."

Lisa Niemi is scheduled to appear on Tuesday at The Women's Conference in Long Beach, CA where she will join a round table discussion with Susan St. James and Elizabeth Edwards. The topic will be Grief, Healing and Resilience. The annual conference will be hosted by Maria Shriver and her husband, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
