theinsider.com - "CBS Evening News" anchor Katie Couric is opening up about the late Walter Cronkite, one of her legendary predecessors on the broadcast. "He set a standard for all of us," Couric told "The Early Show Saturday Edition." She added that as sad as it is that Cronkite passed away on Friday, "I think this opportunity to celebrate his legacy and his accomplishments is really an important opportunity for all of us, because I think, sometimes, the standards of journalism have been challenged." Couric said she admired Cronkite for "his honor and integrity and decency," and said that "his spirit lives on in a very palpable way in the hallways of CBS." "You know, I met him on several occasions. He was kind enough to take me out to dinner the summer before I started at CBS News. He was, as everyone has been saying ... a truly wonderful man, an American icon. "And if I could do one quarter of the job that he did on the 'CBS Evening News,' I'd be very proud of my work. So that just shows how tremendously influential and important he was and continued to be, even after he left the anchor chair," she said. Cronkite passed away on Friday at age 92.

The Associated Press reports that Shriver sent an invitation to the reality TV star five months ago at the suggestion of her teenage daughters who watch the hit TLC show. "I think [Kate’s] life has certainly changed dramatically, but so be it," Shriver told The Associated Press. "I think that's the beauty of this conference -- to have Madeleine Albright and Kate Gosselin at the same place." California's first lady will host her annual conference in Long Beach this October, says the AP. Gosselin was photographed on the Fourth of July holiday with her estranged husband Jon Gosselin -- marking the first time they were spotted together since their headline-grabbing split.

Did Katie Couric Give Alex Rodriguez Baseball Advice?

theinsider.com - Katie Couric sat down with David Letterman on "The Late Show" Monday night, and she revealed that although baseball star Alex Rodriguez did not come clean to her about his steroid use he actually sought her advice on his baseball career. Rodriguez appeared on "60 Minutes" in 2007 and during that interview he told the Emmy Award-winning broadcaster that he was not using steroids. Couric explained to Letterman that she had no reason to doubt Rodriguez and thought he was telling the truth because she generally tries to believe the best in people. The "CBS Evening News" anchor explained that Rodriguez later called to apologize for his dishonesty after reports surfaced that he had used performance enhancing drugs. "He said, 'I'm really sorry - I'd love to sit down and talk to you about all this sometime.' He actually wrote me a note, and I believe it was hand delivered." Couric also revealed that this wasn't the only phone call she received from the Yankees shortstop, he actually called her at one point for her advice. "I was talking to him a lot during that whole opting out period," Couric says. "At one time he even asked me for career advice. He said, 'what team do you think I should play for?'" After hearing this news Letterman joked: "That should have told you he was on the juice, that he's calling you."

The Associated Press reports that CBS News' Katie Couric has landed the first interview with hero pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and his crew – and it's set to air on CBS' "60 Minutes” on February 8. Sullenberger was initially set to speak with NBC "Today Show"'s Matt Lauer, but the interview did not happen because the water landing of U.S. Airways Flight 1549 was under investigation, says the AP.
