Her parents, Laura Liddell and Geoffrey Kendal, used to run a touring Shakespeare company in India. The film Shakespeare-Wallah was based on their experiences.
Sister of Jennifer Kendal.

Appointed a CBE in 1995.
She was awarded the 1989 London Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Actress for her performances in Much Ado About Nothing and Ivanov.
