Currently serves as Artistic Director of the Actors' Studio. Earned Tony nominations as Best Actress in a Play for the following performances: "The Seven Descents of Myrtle" (1968); "And Miss Reardon Drinks A Little" (1971); and "Miss Margarida's Way" (1978). She also recently earned a Featured Actress Tony nomination for "Mornings at Seven" (2002). Originally studied to be a lawyer. Was a childhood friend of Jack Lemmon. Was considered for the role of Mrs. Voorhees in Friday the 13th (1980). With a background in law, she was hired by "The Today Show" and became the first TV network political news reporter. Taught acting at Yale and Columbia, among other universities. Has been nominated for Tony Awards four times: as Best Actress (Dramatic), in 1969 for Tennessee Williams' "The Seven Descents of Myrtle" and in 1971 for "And Miss Reardon Drinks A Little;" as Best Actress (Play), in 1978 for "Miss Margarida's Way" (1978); and as Best Actress (Featured Role - Play), in 2002 for a revival of "Morning's at Seven." Starred as "Maude" in the Paper Mill Playhouse's production of "Harold and Maude: The Musical". Adopted child Abraham Parsons Zimroth was born in 1983. Has twin daughters Abbie and Martha Gehman, from her marriage to Richard Gehman.
