Currently serves as Artistic Director of the Actors' Studio.

Earned Tony nominations as Best Actress in a Play for the following performances: "The Seven Descents of Myrtle" (1968); "And Miss Reardon Drinks A Little" (1971); and "Miss Margarida's Way" (1978). She also recently earned a Featured Actress Tony nomination for "Mornings at Seven" (2002).

Originally studied to be a lawyer.

Was a childhood friend of Jack Lemmon.

Was considered for the role of Mrs. Voorhees in Friday the 13th (1980).

With a background in law, she was hired by "The Today Show" and became the first TV network political news reporter.
