Ellen Degeneres Discusses Murder Of Gay Student

Ellen DeGeneres took on a serious tone to discuss the murder of Lawrence King, a 15-year-old student in Oxnard, California.  He was openly gay and killed as a result   when he asked another male student to be his Valentine.  Lawrence was allegedly shot to death by the other boy his age.

Ellen began to choke up and was on the verge of tears as she talked about the need for change in our country.  She reiterated that she isn't political, but mentioned that this is an election year and that this type of crime must end. The show should air later today, please check local listings.

I love Ellen, but it's about time Ellen gets political even though she tries to shy away from it! I'm really glad she spoke up because policy affects everyone irregardless of whether or not people dislike the processes in place or the dirty exchanges between political candidates.  Hate crimes should not be happening anymore! People should not feel compelled to harm others physically or emotionally, especially on the basis of their race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, age, ability, and economic status (class).  Please get out there and vote this year.  Not only do kids deserve to feel safe in school, everyone in our society deserves to feel safe to be who they are.

Lawrence King, rest in peace.  Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to Lawrence's family and friends as well as the community.
