'dancing With The Stars' ' Competitors Square Off With Four New Dances
Tue, 13 Oct 2009 07:36:34 | Rate news: +0
After last week's elimination of Debi Mazar and Tom DeLay's withdrawal due to injury, only 11 teams remain on "Dancing with the Stars." This week, the celebs and their professional partners performed one of four dances that have not been previously seen on the show: the Country Two Step, the Bolero, the Charleston and the Lambada. Former UFC champ Chuck Liddell and Anna Trebunskaya were up first with the Country Two Step. Head judge Len Goodman told him, "I thought the lift was very good. What I like about you is you bring entertainment to the show. There is a novelty factor about you because [we] don't expect you to be able to dance. Your quality of dancing isn't there. You need to improve." Bruno ed, "You bring carnage and mayhem in everything you do, but it still managed to look like a Two Step." Carrie Ann agreed, adding, "Of all the dances you have done, you did this one the best. What I love about you is, you may not have a lot of grace, but you never let the dance beat you." Chuck and Anna scored 17 out of a possible 30 points. Dancing the Charleston were Melissa Joan Hart and Mark Ballas. Bruno raved, "Delicious. You brought the 1920s Hollywood flapper back to life. I felt I was back in the '20s watching a flicker. You had the role down 110 percent." Carrie Ann enthused, "That was your dance. You can take that one on the road. You were fantastic. I am proud of you. Break through." Len agreed, adding, "This dance is about the three E's: Energy, excitement and entertainment. You did them all." The couple got their first 10 of the season, for a total of 28 points. Dancing the Bolero were Olympic swimmer Natalie Coughlin and her partner Alec Mazo. Carrie Ann was on the fence about the dance, saying, "I appreciate that you went for the difficulty, but I saw more of a struggle for the movements. Keep on going for the difficult." Len disagreed, telling them, "I thought it had beautiful, lyrical movement. I would have liked a little more romance between the two of you, but I liked it a lot." Bruno declared, "I am happy to see you come to 'Basic Instincts.' At times it was like watching Sharon Stone -- beautiful and dangerous. But watch your arms." They were awarded 24 points. Pop star Aaron Carter and his pro partner Karina Smirnoff danced the forbidden dance: the Lambada. Len said, "I like your enthusiasm. To be honest, I think you should have spent your time more on the rhythm of the dance and the raunchiness, rather than the back flip. The Lambada is a dance I want to see raunchy." Bruno told them, "I do appreciate that you put everything you had into the dance. Imagine you are an actor, the character of this is Gilles Marini [who was in the audience]. You are not doing that. You have to translate a feel though your body." Carrie Ann advised, "You have to chill out. That is what they are both saying. You were trying too hard. You are going way over the top and it is hard to watch. It turns people off to you. Listen to what I am saying. I am not trying to hurt your feelings." Aaron and Karina scored their lowest ever, only 18 points. "Iron Chef"'s Chairman Mark Dacascos and his partner Lacey Schwimmer drew the Country Two Step. Bruno joked, "You should have a roll in the hay more often, because your confidence was much improved. But you lost your footing there. It is so obvious in this dance. Carrie Ann said, "Thank you. Finally the confidence is there. You were connected to Lacey. It was the most exciting Two Step of the night so far. Very good." Len complimented Lacey on her choreography, saying, "I loved the progression around the room. What I liked is Mark wasn't hanging there. He was helping. You were heavy in your footwork, though. Very well done." The judges awarded them 22 points. Next up were Kelly Osbourne and Louis Van Amstel with the Charleston. Carrie Ann complimented, "Watching you dance is like watching a little birdie get its wing and learn to fly. Your face lights up. You gave us a very specific look [with costumes and makeup] and you had to live up to -- and that you did." Len agreed, saying, "You came out with confidence and you performed the dance. We didn't see any lack of confidence tonight. Overall, [it was] very well done." Bruno ed, "I love Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey. It was good to get in touch with them and good Bob Fosse touches. A very good performance. You should be happy." Kelly and Louis scored 23 points. Model Joanna Krupa and Derek Hough were the second couple to dance the Lambada. Len complimented them, saying, "I know what I want for tomorrow night's encore. Derek, you never disappoint. Whatever dance, you come up with fantastic choreography. It was a little repetitious here and there, but great job. I really enjoyed it." Bruno joked, "Don't try this at home without taking the necessary precautions. Sexual energy. I have enough now for the next six months." Carrie Ann agreed, saying, "I hope the children were in bed. It worked because the Lambada is all about passionate sex. It is driven by the crotch area and that had it." They were awarded 26 points. Donny Osmond and Kym Johnson flashed back to the jazz era with the Charleston. Bruno said, "This week shows a showman in his element. I like all the theatrical touches. It had a little bit of Ragtime. Very well done. A little thing though. You've got to get sharper on the kicks." Carrie Ann ed, "It was excellent because you played to your strengths. You moved well as a team. It was very good." Len said, "You looked good, you danced good and watching you does you good." Donny and Kym earned 24 points. Dancing the Bolero were former Dallas Cowboys star Michael Irvin and his pro partner Anna Demidova. Carrie Ann said, "I definitely saw the romance happening, but it is so hard for me because there wasn't enough dancing. The poses were nice, but it was too many poses." Len agreed, adding, "It was slightly economic with the movement. Michael, as far as I am concerned, of the four dances we are seeing [tonight], this is the most difficult. Your score from me is going to go up." Bruno ed, "Your dance is like the economy. Everything is supposed to get better but nothing happens. I can see you played the romance, but what about the steps?" Their score was one of the two lowest of the night: 16 points. Snowboard champion Louie Vito and partner Chelsie Hightower went country with the Two Step. Len wasn't thrilled, saying, "It was just a series of walks and you stopped and Chelsie did something. It didn't have enough going on. You've had two weeks of dances that didn't suit. Hopefully, you will be back [and do more]." Bruno agreed, adding, "For a Two Step, the timing was dubious. You went through it, but by the skin of your teeth and your charm." Carrie Ann made it unanimous, saying, "I didn't feel any of the music coming through you. Chelsie, you were working it, but there was too much shuffling going on." Louie and Chelsie tied for the lowest score with 16 points. Singer Mya and Dmitry Chaplin wrapped up the night's performances with the Lambada. Bruno raved, "That was an exotic roller coaster. You would want to ride that over and over again until you were left exhausted and exhilarated." Carrie Ann agreed, enthusing, "Mya's on fire! That was amazing. Not only did you have the sexy and the raunchy, but you brought the sophistication. You made it classy." Len wasn't as thrilled, saying, "I never feel that you are going to go wrong. Your routines are not boring. What I have got to say is you set your standards high. Your standards are high and I expect more. From the Lambada, I thought I was going to get more." Getting 10s from Bruno and Carrie Ann, gave the dancing partners a score of 28. "Dancing with the Stars"' results show airs tomorrow night at 9 p.m. on ABC when Shakira performs "Did It Again" and "Hips Don’t Lie."

Backstage At 'dwts': Injured Debi Mazar And Axed Ashley Hamilton
Thu, 24 Sep 2009 19:01:17 | Rate news: +0
In last night's dramatic double elimination, Ashley Hamilton and Macy Gray were the first celebs sent home. "The Insider" caught up with Ashley backstage, as well as injured celeb competitor Debi Mazar and more celebs and dancers. Debi is recovering from a neck strain. Her endurance will be tested in next week's tango because the dance requires a lot of head movement. Her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy, said, "She's going to suck it up." Kelly Osbourne is trying to elude injury by doing Pilates with her partner, visiting a chiropractor, and treating herself to massages. She said, "If you push yourself too hard in anything, you're going to get hurt. The one thing Louis always says to me is, 'Listen to your body. If you hurt, don't push it.'" Ashley's sense of humor allowed him to accept his departure in stride. He told "The Insider," "I knew I was in trouble when I came on the dance floor and people were laughing...I never saw scores that low since my SATs. I'm just kidding. I didn't take the SAT." His partner, Edyta Sliwinska, ed to her comedic cohort, "You have a lot of new material for your jokes from the show." To keep everyone's spirits up, she added, "There are no losers in this competition." Macy's fellow contestants had nothing but nice words to say about their departed friend. Natalie Coughlin regrets not getting to know her better, saying, "I realized today during the rehearsal that someone actually leaves and it makes me sad because I didn't get a chance to hang out with them as much as I had liked." "Dancing with the Stars" is known for its hardly-there costumes and suggestive choreography. The pros and celebs also weighed in on whether or not it is a kid-friendly show. Kelly handled this question with as much grace as she displayed on the dance floor. She told "The Insiders'" Samantha Harris, "There's a way you can be sexy and be really classy and I think it takes a smart woman to know how to do that." Kelly's partner Louis Van Amstel concurs, saying, "You can have a lot of clothes on and make it sexy from within." Alec Mazo cites the judge's as being the provocative part of the show, saying, "It's all about power of suggestion, so I do think the judges have to be careful about what they say. I think quite often they do say things they should not necessarily be saying." Maksim defended his scantily clad image, saying, "I know I always go shirtless, but I don't mean it in any kind of derogatory way. I just represent the natural tango, cha cha, salsa. It's all very Latin, very hot." To read a recap of Wednesday night's "Dancing with the Stars" results show, click here.

The Highs And Lows Of 'dwts' Ladies' Night
Wed, 23 Sep 2009 09:34:09 | Rate news: +0
On Tuesday night's part two of "Dancing with the Stars"' three-night premiere, the ladies took to the dance floor! Actress Debi Mazar was first up, and she and her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy earned a score of 16 for their salsa. Judge Len Goodman ed, "It was full of energy, and I think you're full of potential, but I think you have a lot of work to do." Carrie Ann Inaba felt similarly, saying, "I think you have a lot of guts, but I think what you lack is a connection from your character to your moves." Next up were actress Melissa Joan Hart and her partner Mark Ballas, who performed the Viennese Waltz to earn a score of 18. Carrie Ann said that "it felt a little choppy" but that Melissa had a "definite elegance." Len's was, "[It had] lots of poor footwork, but overall, it was ok." Singer Mya and her partner Dmitry Chaplin inspired the first Len-Bruno war of words this season with their Viennese Waltz. Carrie Ann started the conversation with a compliment, saying, "Way to set the bar tonight. Mya, that was gorgeous." Len, however, saw things differently, saying, "This was not a Viennese Waltz, it was a theatrical hodgepodge," to which Bruno Tonioli got up and yelled, "The girl was magnificent!" Mya and Dmitry received 8s from Carrie Ann and Bruno, but Len's 5 brought their score to a total of 21. Model and entrepreneur Kathy Ireland and her partner Tony Dovolani scored a 16 for their salsa. Len critiqued that it "lacked any energy for me," while Bruno ed, "I know you can sell almost anything, but you didn't sell the salsa." Olympic swimmer Natalie Coughlin and her partner Alex Mazo's salsa didn't thrill the judges, but they still earned a score of 19. Len said that he was "bewildered" that the ladies hadn't knocked his socks off with their salsa perfomances thus far in the evening. Singer Macy Gray and her partner Jonathan Roberts seemed to mystify the judges with Macy's mellow take on their Viennese Waltz, for which they earned a 15. Carrie Ann said of Macy's style: "It's beautiful in its own bizarre way." Bruno said, "Macy, you are endearing -- it was like watching a child taking its first steps. ... Now we've got to start working on the technique." Model Joanna Krupa and her pro partner Derek Hough's salsa wowed the judges, earning the top score of the night: a 24. Len exclaimed, "At last, we've seen a hot smoking salsa!" Bruno said, "That's what a salsa should be," and Carrie Ann said, "I'm going to agree, I thought it was hot. ... If you have confidence, it's going to take you all the way!" Actress, singer and fashion designer Kelly Osbourne and her partner Louis Van Amstel danced the Viennese Waltz to a score of 23, and brought tears to the eyes of her mom Sharon Osbourne, who was with her dad, rocker Ozzy Osbourne, in the audience. "Kelly, I cannot believe my eyes. The wild child rock princess transformed into a vision of grace, elegance and a lot of impeccable style," Bruno said. Carrie Ann ed, "Mom and Dad Osbourne should be very proud," while Len said simply, "It was the best Viennese Waltz of the night." The relay dances were up next. Four teams faced off and were ranked according to how well they did. Natalie, Kathy, Debi and Joanna and their partners competed in the foxtrot relay. Carrie Ann told Kathy, "I thought you just looked like you were going to the Oscars." Len thought Natalie "had beautiful extension." Bruno said that Joanna was "still smoking!" Joanna earned a score of 10, Natalie earned an 8, Debi earned a 6 and Kathy earned a 4, along with their partners. In the cha cha relay, Macy, Mya, Kelly and Melissa battled it out. Len told Kelly, "You produced tonight, two first class dances." Bruno told Mya, "Mya, ah, that footwork ... you can hit it!" Carrie Ann told Melissa, "Much better!" Mya scored 10, Kelly scored 8, Melissa scored 6 and Macy scored 4, along with their partners. Tune in to ABC on Wednesday for the third night of the season nine premiere, in which two teams will be eliminated! The show will also pay tribute to Patrick Swayze.

'dwts'' Debi Mazar & Mark Dacascos Are Ready To Cha Cha
Sat, 19 Sep 2009 04:12:10 | Rate news: +0
Get ready for more glitter and glitz when "Dancing with the Stars" premieres its new season Monday night with more contestants than ever before competing for the disco-ball trophy! Two of those in the new cast of twinkletoes are "Entourage" star Debi Mazar and "Iron Chef America"'s Chairman Mark Dacascos, who tell us that they are almost ready -- but not quite. "I don't have my spray tan yet so I am not ready," Debi jokes. Each of the couples will be required to perform one complete dance and then take part in a relay dance with three other teams. The men dance on Monday; the women on Tuesday. Then on Wednesday, two couples will be sent home during the results show. One of Debi's two dances is the foxtrot, which she calls "a cruel and sadistic dance for a woman" because of the posture it requires. But, in order to make it work, she says, "I am trying to get my inner princess to come out. I don't know if I have a princess. I have a queen." Meanwhile, Mark is having a hard time adjusting to wearing the men's dance shoes, which have Cuban heels. "These heels are tapered and have no ankle support. It is difficult," he says. And while we are on the topic of dancewear, even though Debi will be glowing as a result of her spray tan, she says she won't go too revealing: " I have had a couple of children and I haven't been to the gym in a couple of years since I had my last child. I am not used to showing off my tummy or my thighs, so instead of worrying about it, I am just [going to] represent my age. If I have a little jiggle going on, 'Hey, I am a woman. I am not 21.'" Mark's dance will be the cha cha cha, but he reveals that his partner, Lacey Schwimmer, has added some kung fu moves in homage to the numerous karate and kung fu championships he has won. Becoming a "Dancing with the Stars" competitor requires a lot of hard work, but in addition to learning how to foxtrot, waltz and quickstep, the stars also gain a little personal insight. For Debi, who is partnered with Maksim Chmerkovskiy, she says she has realized, "I talk too much. I need to shut up, listen and be quiet. That is my big lesson. Also, you have to own it, so it is giving me a new self-confidence." And for Mark, he says, "Lacey keeps telling me I need to stop thinking and just do it." "Dancing with the Stars" premieres Monday, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. on ABC.
