Playbill - A Little Night Music took 36 years to get back to Broadway, but the memory of the original still seems to weigh heavily in the air at the new production of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's classic, which stars Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury. Trevor Nunn directed the staging, which opened Dec. 13.
Screen gems Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury are taking the stage of The Great White Way in "A Little Night Music." "The Insider" was there for opening night on Sunday. Catherine was happy to debut the production in front of her supportive family, including husband Michael Douglas. She told "The Insider" how the stage compares to the screen: "It's just really different. You can never ever, ever get that immediacy that you get on stage, live theatre. It's just something that I've missed…and now that I'm doing it again, I've realized how much I enjoy it and how much us actors enjoy that applause." The legendary Angela Lansbury praised her co-stars, saying, "The company was very up tonight and Catherine Zeta-Jones was just superlative, so we hope that we have a lovely hit on our hands." Lansbury, whose hit, "Murder, She Wrote," debuted only a year before Arthur's "Golden Girls," told "The Insider" that Arthur was part of a bygone era of television. "The Insider" spoke with Lansbury at the Point Foundation Honors, which celebrate current and future champions of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community. Actress Angela Lansbury shares her thoughts about the passing of Bea Arthur. Lansbury released the following statement to "The Insider": "Bea Arthur and I first met when we did 'Mame' together in 1965. She became and has remained 'My Bosom Buddy' ever since. I am deeply saddened by her passing, but also relieved that she is released from the pain. I spoke to Matt, her son, yesterday and I was aware that her time was imminent. She was a rare and unique performer and a dear, dear friend.” Arthur passed away at her home on Saturday at the age of 86.
