Go, Speed Racer! Go!

High School Musical’s Zac Efron is in talks to star in the lead role of The Wachowski brothers’ (V For Vendetta, The Matrix trilogy) adaptation of Speed Racer, the live-action adaptation of the Japanese cartoon series.

Zac, 19, was even granted permission by Disney to leave the High School Musical 2 set for a day so that he could attend the Speed Racher callback audition.  If Warner Bros. is smart, they still snag him!

Speed Racer is scheduled for a May 23, 2008 release.

Zac already has a feature film Hairspray with John Travolta set to drop July 20.
