Posthumous Release Of Ted Kennedy Memoir
Thu, 03 Sep 2009 09:33:36 | Rate news: +0
The late Senator Edward Kennedy candidly speaks of the demons that contributed to his long and fascinating life and political career. Read on for excerpts prior to the book's publication. In his 532-page memoir titled "True Compass," already obtained by the New York Times, Kennedy opens up about his remorse for the infamous Chappaquiddick car accident in 1969. He calls his leaving the scene of the accident "inexcusable" and admits he lived with guilt associated with it for decades to follow. On July 18, 1969, Kennedy drove a car off a bridge into a pond. He swam to safety, leaving Mary Jo Kopechne in the car to drown. She was found 10 hours later. The life of Kennedy has been marked by many family tragedies including the assassination of his brother, President John F. Kennedy, in 1963. Following the investigation, he had a full briefing by Earl Warren, the chief justice, and says he "was satisfied then, and satisfied now." Kennedy reveals details behind his failed bid for the presidency in 1980 and discusses his relationships, good and bad, with other notable political figures. Brain cancer claimed the life of Kennedy last week at the age of 77. "True Compass" is scheduled to be published on September 14 and was written with the help of a collaborator. The New York Times has already received a copy for their possession.

Liam Neeson On Ted Kennedy & Life After Natasha
Wed, 26 Aug 2009 18:53:08 | Rate news: +0
Liam Neeson talked about his relationship with the late Senator Ted Kennedy -- and how his family is dealing with the loss of his wife Natasha Richardson. Speaking to Diane Sawyer on "Good Morning America," the critically acclaimed actor says the Kennedy clan had an influence in his life early on. "I have a very clear memory of being a 10-year-old boy and being taken to the ancestral Kennedy home in Ireland," he says, adding that they posed for a photograph under an American and Irish flag. "I also met him a couple times over the years," he says, adding that Kennedy wrote a "very, very beautiful, touching condolence letter when Natasha died earlier this year. He was a special man. It’s the end of an era, I’m sure." Liam agreed with Diane in that the Kennedy family was "very influential" as they worked diligently to help end the violence in Northern Ireland -- a situation that is reflected in his new film 'Five Minutes of Heaven.' The movie details the true story of a man who is haunted by a murder he committed in his teens. "One act of violence can absolutely demolish a family," he says of the film. As to how his own family is dealing with the loss of Natasha, "We’re doing good," he says. "To be honest, we’re taking each day as it comes. I’m still getting extraordinary condolence letters from American people. It’s deeply, deeply touching." In fact, Liam says the outpouring of emotion is one of the reasons he recently became a US citizen. “I’ve been living here for 20 years and America has been very good to me," he says. "I’m still an Irishman but I’ve become an American citizen. I’m very proud of that."

President Barack Obama On Ted Kennedy: 'an Important Chapter In Our History Has Come To An End'

President Barack Obama shared his heartfelt words of condolence Wednesday morning in response to Senator Edward M. Kennedy's death after a long battle with brain cancer.   "Michelle and I were heartbroken to learn this morning of the death of our dear friend, Senator Ted Kennedy," Obama says in his statement. "For five decades, virtually every major piece of legislation to advance the civil rights, health and economic well being of the American people bore his name and resulted from his efforts. I valued his wise counsel in the Senate, where, regardless of the swirl of events, he always had time for a new colleague. I cherished his confidence and momentous support in my race for the Presidency. And even as he waged a valiant struggle with a mortal illness, I've profited as President from his encouragement and wisdom." "An important chapter in our history has come to an end. Our country has lost a great leader, who picked up the torch of his fallen brothers and became the greatest United States Senator of our time." "And the Kennedy family has lost their patriarch, a tower of strength and support through good times and bad." "Our hearts and prayers go out to them today--to his wonderful wife, Vicki, his children Ted Jr., Patrick and Kara, his grandchildren and his extended family."

Senator Edward M. Kennedy Passes Away
Wed, 26 Aug 2009 09:34:57 | Rate news: +0
Massachusetts Senator Edward M. Kennedy, the youngest brother of President John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy, died Tuesday at his Massachusetts home of brain cancer. He was 77. Kennedy’s sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver passed away in August, and while he attended a private mass held in remembrance of his sister, the senator, suffering from a brain tumor, was not able to attend her funeral service. Kennedy didn't let his illness get him down. He returned to the Senate in July to help break a Republican filibuster of a Medicare bill and, in August 2008, he was the featured speaker on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention. In 2009, Kennedy, who will be releasing his memoirs this fall, was bestowed an honorary knighthood by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. In March, he received the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award as part of his 77th birthday celebration at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Born on February 22, 1932, he was the fourth son and ninth child of Joseph and Rose Kennedy. With three older brothers -- Joseph, who was killed during World War II; John, who was assassinated during his presidency in 1963; and Robert, who was assassinated in 1968 while running for the presidency -- Ted Kennedy was not originally expected to fulfill his family's political ambitions, but the death of his older brothers changed that and he inherited the mantle of "presidential heir apparent." But Kennedy never ran for the top office, rather serving as the senator for the state of Massachusetts since winning the post in November 1962. Kennedy was a graduate of Harvard in 1956, following which he enrolled at the University of Virginia Law School. He obtained his law degree in 1959 and was admitted to the Massachusetts bar the same year. He began his political career by managing his brother John's Senate campaign while in law school; and when JFK was elected president, Kennedy ran -- and won -- the Senate seat on his own at age 30 during the special election. In 1969, it seemed that his political aspirations might come to an end. Kennedy drove his car off of a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island. He escaped, but Mary Jo Kopechne, a passenger in the car, drowned. Kennedy's failure to not immediately report the accident -- he waited close to nine hours -- caused a media frenzy. Kennedy later pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and was given a suspended sentence of two months in jail. At that time, he asked the people of Massachusetts to advise him as to whether or not he should continue to represent them in the Senate. The answer was yes, he should. Kennedy was married to and divorced from the late Virginia Joan Bennett. They had three children: Kara Anne, Edward Moore, Jr. and Patrick Joseph, who survive their father.
