Listed as one of twelve "Promising New Actors of 1991" in John Willis's Screen World, Vol. 31. [1991]

His full name is Stephen Weaver Collins. His middle name, Weaver, is a family name on his mother's side. His great-great grandfather was General James B. Weaver, the 1880 Greenback party candidate and the 1892 Populist party candidate for President of the United States. In 1892 General Weaver won 22 electorial votes.

Reverend Eric Camden, Collins's character on "7th Heaven" (1996), was ranked #11 in TV Guide's list of the "50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time" [20 June 2004 issue].

Said in an interview that he felt very much like an outsider during the filming of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), where he played Commander Will Decker, a feeling that he actually tried to capitalize on in his characterization of Decker.

Author of two novels, Eye Contact and Double Exposure.

He is an accomplished guitarist and songwriter.
