His full name is Stephen Weaver Collins. His middle name, Weaver, is a family name on his mother's side. His great-great grandfather was General James B. Weaver, the 1880 Greenback party candidate and the 1892 Populist party candidate for President of the United States. In 1892 General Weaver won 22 electorial votes.

While attending Amherst College, he was an active member of their (mainly a cappella) choral group, the Zumbyes (Class of 1969). In 1968, on a yearly LP released by the group, he was the featured singer (as Steve Collins) on "California Dreaming". Also in the group at that time, singing bass, was Dave Eisenhower (Class of 1970), grandson of the former President, and soon-to-be son-in-law to the next President, who was the Vice President to his Grandfather.
