Roger Ebert Defends Tweet About "jackass" Star (reuters)

Reuters - Film critic Roger Ebert on Tuesday defended an admonition against drunk driving he posted on Twitter in response to the death of "Jackass" star Ryan Dunn, who was photographed drinking before his car crash.

Roger Ebert: 'i Was Probably Too Quick To Tweet'
Wed, 22 Jun 2011 03:16:08 | Rate news: +0
Filed under: Roger Ebert, Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn, The Facts Behind The Funny!, The Facts Behind The Funny Position 013 Roger Ebert says he "was probably too quick to tweet" about the car crash that killed "Jackass" star Ryan Dunn yesterday ... explaining that his post was "not intended as cruel."

Ebert just blogged about the situation on his website -- saying, "To begin with, I offer my sympathy to Ryan Dunn's family and friends, and to those of Zachary Hartwell, who also died in the crash. I mean that sincerely. It is tragic to lose a loved one."

Ebert continues, "I also regret that my tweet about the event was considered cruel. It was not intended as cruel. It was intended as true."

Ebert explains that he wrote the tweet based on preliminary reports and admits, "I have no way of knowing if Ryan Dunn was drunk at the time of his death."

"I don't know what happened in this case, and I was probably too quick to tweet. That was unseemly."

Ebert, however, staunchly defends the message in his tweet -- that people should NOT drink and drive -- saying, "I do know that nobody has any business driving on a public highway at 110 mph, as some estimated -- or fast enough, anyway, to leave a highway and fly through 40 yards of trees before crashing."

"That is especially true if the driver has had three shots and three beers. Two people were killed. What if the car had crashed into another car?"

As we previously reported, Dunn's friend Bam Margera WENT OFF on Ebert last night -- telling the movie critic to shut his "f**king mouth" about Dunn's crash.

Margera Rips Ebert -- Shut Up About Ryan Dunn
Tue, 21 Jun 2011 07:01:47 | Rate news: +0
Filed under: Bam Margera, Roger Ebert Bam Margera is FURIOUS with Roger Ebert -- telling the the movie critic to shut his "fat f*cking mouth" over a tweet Ebert posted earlier today, criticizing Bam's friend and "Jackass" co-star Ryan Dunn for drinking and driving ... just hours after Dunn passed away.

Earlier today, after TMZ posted the story that Dunn was seen drinking at a Philly-area bar before his fatal crash, Ebert posted a tweet that read, "Friends don't let jackasses drink and drive."

After a day of silence, Bam finally went to his Twitter to BLAST Ebert late Monday night ... saying, "I just lost my best friend, I have been crying hysterical for a full day and piece of s**t roger ebert has the gall to put in his 2 cents about a jackass drunk driving and [he is] one, f**k you!"

Bam added, "Millions of people are crying right now, shut your fat f**king mouth!"

Roger Ebert Blasts Ryan Dunn For Drunk Driving
Tue, 21 Jun 2011 03:15:06 | Rate news: +0
Filed under: Ryan Dunn, Roger Ebert Ryan Dunn hasn't even been dead for a day yet -- and film critic Roger Ebert is already ripping the late "Jackass" star for boozing before getting behind the wheel  ... tweeting, "Friends don't let jackasses drink and drive."

TMZ broke the story ... Dunn's drinking buddy claims Ryan had at least 3 beers and 3 shots before hitting the road in his Porsche.

Obviously, Ebert has a point -- but we gotta ask ...

Bruno

If he had been alone in the car, then this would be too soon. Instead, he had a passenger and was out drinking with friends before the crash. You don't have to be legally drunk to have alcohol affect your ability to drive. Even a single drink has been shown to decrease your reaction time. It's sad that he took someone out with him when he made the very jackass-ish decision to drink and then drive.
Jon

Ebert's right.Enabler's let enabler's drink and drive.True friendship is a beautiful caring thing.Where people look out for what's best for one another.
Erica

Someone just lost their son...it hasn't been said whether or not alcohol was a factor...too soon? yeah your kinda jumping the gun there...wouldn't you feel like a jacka** if he wasn't drunk? This is sad anyway you look at it...a little respect people.

Too soon? Absolutely not!! Its too late!If in fact he was drunk at the time of the accident, he should burn in hell. He took an innocent life and destroyed a nice car and public property. Hope he had good insurance, because his family is gonna get sued big by the other persons family. We all know that drinking and driving is bad, yet people continue to do it. Maybe we need to bring back prohibition in the US to keep idiots from hurting themselves and others.
Brad

Wow..At least have some f***en respect. The man just passed for gods sake!
Curious

Is Ebert ripping Ryan or is he ripping the folks that let Ryan drive after drinking?Seems to me he's ripping the friends of the Jackass star for letting him drive after drinking.Open to interpretation?
alessandra

That may be the case, But come on the poor guy has not even been dead a day, and the fact that we don't even know his blood level yet, what a ass have a heart
Elle0375

He is right!! And it's not too soon....more people need to hear this before they end up dead or killing an innocent person!!!! There is no excuse, ever for this!!!!!
Mr. DickTurpin

Ebert is being his usually witty self - his makes him sound like a jackass - that's the point - it's an homage to Ryan Dunn. Get it?

Thumbs Up! Roger Ebert Returns With New 'at The Movies'
Sat, 11 Sep 2010 03:51:24 | Rate news: +0
Roger Ebert's long-running film review show is making a comeback with a return to its birthplace, WTTW Chicago public television. "This is the rebirth of a dream," says Ebert, who will appear on every episode using his computer voice. His ability to speak was lost after a battle with cancer. Co-produced by Ebert and his wife Chaz, "Roger Ebert Presents At the Movies" will air weekly beginning in January 2011 on PBS. The half-hour show will be co-hosted by Associated Press film critic Christy Lemire and Elvis Mitchell of National Public Radio, and include the copyrighted "Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down" format made famous by Ebert with the late Gene Siskel. Ebert will not debate with the two co-hosts, as, "They'll be awarding the Thumbs, and you can't have three Thumbs." In addition to reviewing new movies, "Roger Ebert Presents At the Movies" will expand into coverage of New Media and contain special segments such as "Roger's Office," with reviews and points of view devoted to classics, overlooked and new films. Respected film bloggers Kim Morgan and Omar Moore will also contribute to the show, which will also have an extended website.
