In 1987 he was cast to play Todd Bowden in Apt Pupil (1998). This first attempt to film this story ran over budget and stopped production. It was to co-star Nicol Williamson, and it was to be directed by Alan Bridges. Spoke at the Republican National Convention in honor of George W. Bush, 2000. He was absent from "NYPD Blue" (1993)'s May 2001 season finale and later announced he would not return to the show because he wanted to devote time to his growing family. His fourth child was due that August. Son Holden is named after actor William Holden with whom Rick co-starred in The Earthling (1980). He and his wife built and designed their Colorado ranch in the summer of 1998. Played Jon Voight's son twice: the first time in The Champ (1979) and the second time in "Return to Lonesome Dove" (1993). Award: Won Director of the Year at the 2005 CMT Video awards for "Whisky Lullaby". Ranked #18 in VH1's list of the 100 Greatest Kid Stars.
