'american Idol''s Top Four Sing Songs From The Movies
Wed, 12 May 2010 07:24:38 | Rate news: +0
The theme on this week's "Aemrican Idol" was songs from the silver screen, and none other than Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx, who won his award for his performance as Ray Charles in 'Ray,' was the mentor for the Final Four. Lee DeWyze opened the night, performing Seal's "Kiss from a Rose" from 'Batman Forever.' Randy Jackson wasn't thrilled, saying, "I am looking at who is in it to win it. For me, you did nothing with that song. It was just okay. It was pitchy in spots. You are the rocker. Be who you are. Choose a rock song." Ellen DeGeneres concurred with Randy, adding, "There could have been more done, but you are so good. I love you." Kara pointed out, "You had a great week last week. I think this is one of the most difficult songs to sing. I think having the arrangement the way [you did didn't help]. You can't take away from the fact that you are still great." Simon said, "There are so many brilliant movies and brilliant songs [you can take and make yours]. That was verging on karaoke. You were trying too hard to sound like the original." Michael Jackson's "Will You Be There" from 'Free Willy' was Michael Lynche's song choice. Randy told him, "I don't know what is going on tonight. This is a cool song made great by Michael Jackson. It has a gospel thing. I wish you had chosen an R&B song. It didn't really take off." Ellen ed, "You can't really go wrong with the sound of a choir behind you. It is a weird thing that your goal is to get into the top three, not to win the thing. You always sound good, but it was a little predictable." Kara said, "All I can think of is [your performance of] 'I am Ready for Love.' I want goose bumps. But I didn't feel that from you. You played it safe. What you did tonight, you could do in your sleep." Simon had no idea what 'Free Willy' was about, and when told, said, "I can't connect a whale called Willy and what you just did. At least, you gave it 100 percent. I kind of felt you meant it." Next up was the first duet of the night: Lee and Crystal Bowersox singing, "Falling Slowly" from 'Once.' Randy complimented, "What a difference a couple of moments make. That could be a hit right now. That is what I am talking about. That is how you do it." Ellen joked, "You are like the new Captain and Tennille. That was great." Kara praised, "One of my favorite moments of the entire season. You both felt like artists. I love the way you interacted. It brought out the best in both of you." Simon concurred, saying, "I don't know if I would call that a good song -- I would call it a fantastic song." Casey James selected Simon and Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson" from 'The Graduate.' Randy was less than impressed."There is nothing you changed about it. It was a cool, laid back song. I am just interested in the subject manner," he said, referring to earlier in the season when Kara ed on his looks. Ellen joked, "I wish they had given you a big-boy guitar." Then she got serious, adding, "I am glad that after last week when you got beat up that you came back and changed it up. I wish you had gone further with it." Kara told him, "For me, this is you fighting to stay in the competition because this is where you are uncomfortable: upfront. You like to jam-bam and do that electric thing. For me, this was a good choice." Simon disagreed, saying, "Personally, I didn't think the song or the performance had the substance required on this important night for you. I thought it was a little bit lazy. I think you could have made more of an impact. I do think there have been some very strange song choices tonight and that was one of them." The last solo song of the night was Crystal, who chose Kenny Loggins' "I'm Alright" from 'Caddyshack.' Randy declared, "I [have been] saying since day one that you are an artist. At least you tried to switch it up. Nice job." Ellen said, "That performance just got crystallized. I think you actually took that song and made it better." Kara concurred, saying, "I completely agree with Ellen. And I agree with Randy: artist." Simon complimented, "I would say after that performance, you, Crystal, are back in the game." The final number of the night was Casey and Michael dueting on Bryan Adams' "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman" from 'Don Juan DeMarco.' Randy ed, "I loved the guitar playing. It started rough, but [ended nice]." Ellen admitted, "Yes, I have loved a woman." Kara told them, "The duets tonight were incredible. They were better than all of the solo performances." Simon agreed, adding, "They were better than the solos." "American Idol" returns Wednesday night at 8 p.m. on FOX with the results show when the Final Four is cut down to the Final Three.
