Paul Giamatti says he regrets turning down an opportunity to do a wine ad campaign after doing the movie Sideways because he thinks he'd be a wealthy man if he had tried to help sell Merlot.

In the movie, he played a wine snob who hated Merlot and afterwards he was approached by grape growers in California to mock the character he played in a TV commercial and print ad.  Giamatti said:

"The Merlot growers tried to get me to do an ad campaign for them; I said no and now I feel like a fool - I could have used the cash."

Giamatti revealed that the role he played in Sideways has made people watch him drink wine:

"People are always pushing Merlot on me. Merlot was the thing I wouldn't drink so everybody thinks it's hilarious to try to make me drink a glass - and they think nobody's ever done that before."

Too bad he didn't do the ad campaign for Merlot, it would've been great!
