Montel Williams is threatening legal action against no one's favorite couple -- Michaele and Tareq Salahi -- accusing them of using his name to promote an upcoming event.

The Salahis are planning a charitable event next month to celebrate the reopening of their Oasis Winery in Virginia -- and, apparently, they've listed Montel as one of their celebrity guests.

That's news to Montel -- because his rep tells TMZ, "Montel doesn't support the Salahis, doesn't know them and did not give them permission to use his name." He says the event organizers also, falsely, announced that Montel's MS Foundation is involved

The rep says a cease and desist letter was fired off to the Salahis today -- demanding they stop using Montel's name and foundation -- and we're told both have since been removed from the website promoting the event.

The Salahis are pleading ignorance ... telling TMZ they had no knowledge Montel's name was on the site.

Montel Williams says he did NOTHING wrong when he brought his marijuana pipe through a Milwaukee airport back in January ... telling TMZ he's actually HAPPY he got caught.

The former talk show host was at LAX last night ... where he explained that because he uses weed for a medicinal purpose, he needs to have his pipe the same way that a diabetic needs to carry around a syringe ... strictly as a "utensil" for taking his medication.

Williams claims officials tested the pipe for marijuana residue -- and the tests came back negative so "the thing was completely thrown out of court."

Still, Montel says the fact that officials FOUND his pipe to begin with "bodes well" for security ... adding, "I'm glad they found it."

Montel -- an outspoken proponent of medical marijuana use -- took the job hoping to create a store that runs more like a pharmacy and less like a shady back-alley head shop.

During a news conference yesterday, Montel announced his partnership with the Albatin Wellness Cooperative -- and said, "We want to provide safe access [to marijuana] for patients and really medicalize this. Patients should be put first."

Montel said he'll be "involved at every level of the cooperative, from the philosophical direction down to the blueprints."

He added, "I want this to be someplace your mother and father could see themselves walk into."

Williams -- who was cited back in January for trying to bring a pipe onto an airplane -- was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the late 90s, and credits pot with alleviating his near-constant neurological pain.
