Joined a sect called The Way when he was 15. Is a Zen Buddhist. Became an ordained Zen priest in 1996. Enjoys hiking. Graduate of Mamaroneck (NY) High School. Announced plans to divorce Bonnie Raitt on November 9, 1999. Has twins with Alma O'Keefe. Student of the Zen Master, Bernie Glassman. Other ordained Zen priests include Leonard Cohen, Bernie Glassman, Pat O'Hara, and Peter Matthiessen. Lost to Peter MacNicol for the part of Stingo in Sophie's Choice. Has written lyrics for a number of songs and artists, including two for his ex-wife Bonnie Raitt, one of which, "Longing in Their Hearts," won a Grammy for Raitt. The other song was from Raitt's "Luck of the Draw" album and was entitled "One Part be My Lover." In the same branch of Buddhism as Peter Matthiessen, Leonard Cohen, Gary Snyder, Peter Coyote, Bernie Glassman, Reb Anderson, Philip Whalen, Richard Baker, Pat O'Hara, Soe Roshi, and Daido Loori.
