Michael Douglas Uses Humor To Fight Cancer
Not letting his cancer diagnosis define him, Michael Douglas appeared on "The Late Show with David Letterman" on Tuesday in good spirits. The 'Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps' star was diagnosed with throat cancer three weeks ago after complaining of a sore throat at the beginning of the summer. He joked, "The time is never a good time for cancer, but particularly with a movie opening. It wasn't the best." Michael has completed the first of eight weeks of radiation and chemotherapy to beat the illness, which he admitted "knocks you out really hard." He appeared happy and healthy on the talk show "because I'm on stage." Following the advice of his father Kirk Douglas, he said, "Kirk would say, 'Son, you gotta look good. You'd never know we might have cancer.'" Although his cancer was diagnosed as being stage four, Michael remains optimistic about making a recovery. He said, "Percentages are very good…it looks like it should be about 80%." After his eight weeks of treatment are completed, his case will be reevaluated to determine if surgery is necessary. Michael expects the treatment to take its toll on him as time progresses in the eight week process. Right now, his throat is "sore. It hurts a lot. It comes in waves." He kept a water bottle close by during the interview. The actor confessed, "I smoked cigarettes and I drank and this particular type of cancer is caused by alcohol drinking." Prior to the diagnosis, Michael enjoyed a summer of travel with wife Catherine Zeta-Jones and their children. "They like Americans this year in Europe too. It's nice. When we screw up they like us a lot more," he jested. Michael is upset he won’t get to return overseas to promote 'Wall Street,' due to his intense treatment schedule, but his dedication to the film is unwavering. "It really made New York look so sexy and stunning. I looked good too," he boasted. 'Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps' rings the opening bell in theaters on September 24.[Read full story on The Insider]
