Prior to establishing his film career, Julian Schnabel made a name for himself (throughout the 1980s) as a "neo-expressionist" artist/painter (some of his paintings involved smashed plates glued to wooden panels). His work has been exhibited at art galleries around the world, and he has been known as the "self-proclaimed lion of the New York art world". His wife, Olatz, appeared as 'Reinaldo's Mother' in "Before Night Falls" (she also served as executive producer on the film). B.F.A., University of Houston, Texas Did the paintings, photos and art direction for the album "By the way" (2002) by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Has at least two daughters: Lola Schnabel(also an artist) and Stella Schnabel. His daughter Stella used to date Red Hot Chili Peppers lead guitarist John Frusciante. They have since broken up. Father of twin sons Cy Schnabel and Olmo Schnabel, and of Vito Maria Schnabel
