Began acting with the National Youth Theatre.

His performance in the title role of the Royal Shakespeare Company's staging of Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2, at the Barbican Centre in London, earned him the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in 1993.

He was awarded the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award in 1993 (1992 season) for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Henry V at the Royal Shakespeare Company.

He and Michael Sheard co-starred as imperial officers in 'Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back'. Both went on to play villains in 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' nine years later: Glover as Walter Donovan, and Sheard as Adolf Hitler.
