More than a thousand people reportedly gathered at the North Carolina church where mourners said goodbye to Elizabeth Edwards during her funeral on Saturday. Approximately 1,100 people congregated at Edenton Street United Methodist Church in downtown Raleigh for the service, says WRAL.com. Edwards' estranged husband, John Edwards, sat silently alongside his and Elizabeth's three children (Cate, Emma Claire and Jack) in the front row during the 75-minute ceremony. Edwards passed away Tuesday after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 61. Her daughter Cate -- who cheered her ailing mother by recently getting engaged, says People.com -- eulogized her, saying, "There aren't words that are good enough," reports the Associated Press. During the eulogy, Cate also recited a passage from a letter Edwards wrote to her children: "I've loved you in the best ways I've known how," the letter said, according to the AP. "All I ever really needed was you, your love, your presence, to make my life complete." Political notables on hand for the service included Sen. John Kerry, who ran for president with then VP-hopeful John Edwards in 2004. The site of service, Edenton Street United Methodist Church, is also where the Edwards held their late son Wade's funeral after he died in a car accident in 1996, says WRAL. Edwards was later laid to rest in a private service at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh, says WRAL. She was buried next to Wade.

Teresa Heinz, the wife of Senator John Kerry, revealed on Wednesday that she is battling breast cancer after receiving "a lifesaving early diagnosis." Read on for details… Heinz wrote in a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette editorial titled "Get that Mammogram," "I was diagnosed and treated for stage one cancer (two different types) in both breasts. The cancer was detected at an early stage thanks to a mammogram and the work of a remarkable physician who insisted on investigating beyond what the mammogram could show. I have had two operations and my prognosis for a full recovery is good." Heinz, 71, urges women to make regular mammograms a priority and said that her illness has "reminded me to slow down, cherish family and friends, and deepen my sense of life as a gift to be unwrapped each day with newfound joy and hope." She also spoke out against the new, controversial guidelines from the U.S. Preventative Service Task Force that suggest that women under 50 no longer need to get annual mammograms, while those over the age of 74 could forgo the procedure. According to the Associated Press, Heinz was treated by the surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital that she had recommended to Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of Kerry’s 2004 running mate John Edwards. Elizabeth Edawrds was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after her husband's failed vice-presidential campaign.
