Posthumous Release Of Ted Kennedy Memoir
Thu, 03 Sep 2009 09:33:36 | Rate news: +0
The late Senator Edward Kennedy candidly speaks of the demons that contributed to his long and fascinating life and political career. Read on for excerpts prior to the book's publication. In his 532-page memoir titled "True Compass," already obtained by the New York Times, Kennedy opens up about his remorse for the infamous Chappaquiddick car accident in 1969. He calls his leaving the scene of the accident "inexcusable" and admits he lived with guilt associated with it for decades to follow. On July 18, 1969, Kennedy drove a car off a bridge into a pond. He swam to safety, leaving Mary Jo Kopechne in the car to drown. She was found 10 hours later. The life of Kennedy has been marked by many family tragedies including the assassination of his brother, President John F. Kennedy, in 1963. Following the investigation, he had a full briefing by Earl Warren, the chief justice, and says he "was satisfied then, and satisfied now." Kennedy reveals details behind his failed bid for the presidency in 1980 and discusses his relationships, good and bad, with other notable political figures. Brain cancer claimed the life of Kennedy last week at the age of 77. "True Compass" is scheduled to be published on September 14 and was written with the help of a collaborator. The New York Times has already received a copy for their possession.

Senator Edward M. Kennedy Passes Away
Wed, 26 Aug 2009 09:34:57 | Rate news: +0
Massachusetts Senator Edward M. Kennedy, the youngest brother of President John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy, died Tuesday at his Massachusetts home of brain cancer. He was 77. Kennedy’s sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver passed away in August, and while he attended a private mass held in remembrance of his sister, the senator, suffering from a brain tumor, was not able to attend her funeral service. Kennedy didn't let his illness get him down. He returned to the Senate in July to help break a Republican filibuster of a Medicare bill and, in August 2008, he was the featured speaker on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention. In 2009, Kennedy, who will be releasing his memoirs this fall, was bestowed an honorary knighthood by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. In March, he received the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award as part of his 77th birthday celebration at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Born on February 22, 1932, he was the fourth son and ninth child of Joseph and Rose Kennedy. With three older brothers -- Joseph, who was killed during World War II; John, who was assassinated during his presidency in 1963; and Robert, who was assassinated in 1968 while running for the presidency -- Ted Kennedy was not originally expected to fulfill his family's political ambitions, but the death of his older brothers changed that and he inherited the mantle of "presidential heir apparent." But Kennedy never ran for the top office, rather serving as the senator for the state of Massachusetts since winning the post in November 1962. Kennedy was a graduate of Harvard in 1956, following which he enrolled at the University of Virginia Law School. He obtained his law degree in 1959 and was admitted to the Massachusetts bar the same year. He began his political career by managing his brother John's Senate campaign while in law school; and when JFK was elected president, Kennedy ran -- and won -- the Senate seat on his own at age 30 during the special election. In 1969, it seemed that his political aspirations might come to an end. Kennedy drove his car off of a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island. He escaped, but Mary Jo Kopechne, a passenger in the car, drowned. Kennedy's failure to not immediately report the accident -- he waited close to nine hours -- caused a media frenzy. Kennedy later pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and was given a suspended sentence of two months in jail. At that time, he asked the people of Massachusetts to advise him as to whether or not he should continue to represent them in the Senate. The answer was yes, he should. Kennedy was married to and divorced from the late Virginia Joan Bennett. They had three children: Kara Anne, Edward Moore, Jr. and Patrick Joseph, who survive their father.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver Passes Away

Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the sister of President John F. Kennedy and mother to California First Lady Maria Shriver, has died. She was 88. Mrs. Kennedy Shriver passed away Tuesday morning at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, she had suffered a series of strokes in recent years, the Associated Press reports. One of nine children born to Rose and Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., Eunice was born in Massachusetts in 1921. A graduate of Stanford University, the achievement she will perhaps be best remembered for was helping to found the national Special Olympics organization, a cause to which she remained committed throughout her life. Kennedy Shriver is survived by her husband of 56 years, Robert Sargent Shriver, five children, and many grandchildren. Upon hearing the news, President Barack Obama issued this statement, saying, "Michelle and I were deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Eunice was many things to many people: a mother who inspired her children to serve others; a wife who supported her husband Sargent in the Peace Corps and in politics; and a sister to her siblings, including brothers John, Robert, and Edward. But above all, she will be remembered as the founder of the Special Olympics, as a champion for people with intellectual disabilities, and as an extraordinary woman who, as much as anyone, taught our nation – and our world – that no physical or mental barrier can restrain the power of the human spirit. "Her leadership greatly enriched the lives of Special Olympians throughout the world, who have experienced the pride and joy of competition and achievement thanks to her vision. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sargent; their children Robert, Maria, Timothy, Mark, and Anthony; and the entire Kennedy family."

Walter Cronkite Passes Away
Sat, 18 Jul 2009 04:04:17 | Rate news: +0
Legendary CBS newscaster Walter Cronkite, who many referred to as "Uncle Walt," has passed away, CBS News reports. He was 92 years old. CBS vice president Linda Mason says Cronkite passed away on Friday evening, surrounded by family in his New York home. His cause of death was cerebral vascular disease, his former chief of staff Marlene Adler tells the Associated Press. As the CBS anchorman for almost 20 years, Cronkite's dependability and everyman demeanor comforted audiences through such lows as the President Kennedy assassination and cheered them in such highs as America landing on the moon. Cronkite was born in 1916 in St. Joseph, MO but grew up in Houston, TX. He wrote for his high school newspaper and became the campus correspondent for the Houston Post when he was a student at the University of Texas. He dropped out of college but continued working for the Post until he moved to Kansas City in 1936 to become a radio announcer for KCMO. In 1937 he was hired by United Press International to cover World War II. As Brussels Bureau Chief, he traveled with troops to North Africa to the D-Day landing and even parachuted into Holland with the 101st Airborne Division. During his nine-year stay at UPI he also covered the Nuremberg Trials and became their Moscow Bureau Chief. In 1948 he returned to the U.S. and was a radio broadcaster out of Washington D.C. until CBS hired Cronkite in 1950 as a correspondent. Throughout the '50s he hosted many of the network's shows, including "CBS News: Up to the Minute," "The Week in Review," "You are There," "It's News to Me" and his most popular "The 20th Century" (later retitled "The 21st Century") which ran from 1957 - 1970. In 1962 when CBS anchorman Douglas Edwards was let go for doing a television commercial, Cronkite was already a household name when he was asked to take over the nightly 15-minute news program. One of Cronkite's first big interviews was in September of 1963 with President John F. Kennedy and less than three months later the anchorman's announcement to the world that J.F.K. had been assassinated would go down in history as one of the most recognized moments of the shocking tragedy. Cronkite continued anchoring through the ‘60s and '70s giving the world its news during one of the most eventful times of U.S. history. He covered everything from the grim Vietnam war to the scandalous Watergate crisis to America landing on the moon - and enthusiastically reporting - "Boy! There they sit on the moon! Just exactly nominal wasn't it? ... On green with the flight plan, all the way down. Man finally is standing on the surface of the moon! My golly!" To make room on the anchordesk for the young and eager CBS reporter Dan Rather, in 1981, after seven Emmys and 19 years as the CBS nightly anchor, Cronkite signed off for the last time with his trademark send-off "And that's the way it is." Cronkite continued working for CBS. He became a member of the board of directors and also stayed on as a special correspondent. He hosted many specials including "We the People 200: The Constitutional Gala" and "Walter Cronkite at Large." In his spare time, Cronkite was an avid sailor and wrote several books, including 1997's A Reporter's Life. His wife Mary Elizabeth Maxwell, known as Betsy, passed away in 2005. He is survived by his three children Nancy, Mary and Walter.
