A 1984 diary entry by Alan Bennett (scriptwriter of A Private Function) mentions Carter amusing himself on the set between takes by doing conjuring tricks. In the finished film he performs a magic trick as Inspector Noble, and in Shakespeare in Love can be seen juggling.
