His break-out dramatic role came off-Broadway playing the lead in Lincoln Center stage production of "Six Degress of Separation."
James went to the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a fraternity brother in Sigma Phi Epsilon
Played the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs in both _"Taken" (2002) (mini)_ and Stargate SG-1.
Besides Dennis Franz, he was the longest-running original cast member of NYPD Blue. He left the series during its eighth season in 2001.
