The Boys Of 'american Idol''s Top 20 Take The Stage!
The 10 male semi-finalists showcased their vocal chords on Tuesday night's "American Idol" -- but did they leave the judges floored or bored? Read on for the recap! First up, Michael Lynche served up the soul with James Brown's "It's a Man's Man's Man's World." Randy Jackson gave him a standing ovation, and Ellen DeGeneres agreed it was a great song to kick the night off with. Kara DioGuardi was also enthused, declaring, "You went from being a singer to someone who could [possibly] be a great artist." Simon Cowell made the positive reviews unanimous, saying, "That was exactly the right kind of song for you." Next, John Park tackled "Gravity" by John Mayer -- but he ended up letting the judges down. "My problem with it was you didn't bring anything new and spicy to [the song] … It was just kind of flat for me," Randy said. Ellen, meanwhile, thought the song "could have used a little more soul." Kara concurred, telling John, "You need to let loose and get out of that comfort zone of yours." Simon thought the problem was that there was "nothing to get excited about. It's what I call a so-what performance." Casey James strapped on an electric axe and rocked out to Gavin DeGraw's "I Don't Want to Be." Randy and Ellen loved Casey's guitar work but weren't as keen on other aspects of his performance, such as his singing. Kara cut to chase, leveling, "The notes were off on the bottom, you didn't hit everything." Simon agreed, telling Casey: "This week you turned into somebody you will see at any bar across America simply trying to be a rock star." Up next, Alex Lambert went acoustic for John Legend's "Everybody Knows." "This is such an improvement for me over last week … It didn't sound as 'sound alike' as it did in the past," Randy praised. "So much better than last week," Ellen agreed. Kara and Simon both said they liked Alex's potential, but Simon felt he needed to hone his "killer instinct." Then, Todrick Hall provided the judges' least favorite performance of the night, crooning Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do With It." "I didn't love this at all," Randy deadpanned, criticizing Todrick's "different, wild arrangement" of the tune. Kara said Todrick was "all over the place," and Ellen thought the tune wasn't the right choice "at all" for him; she also urged him to play to his strength as a dancer. "Move, but don't sing, because this is not working out at all for you," Simon spat, calling the performance "a very corny, bad version of a Tina Turner song." Jermaine Sellers also faced the judges' wrath with his rendition of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On." "It was just so close but so far at the same time … It just wasn't a great performance," Randy sighed. Ellen agreed: "It was off a little bit and [you] pushed too hard." Kara felt Jermaine came off as "forced," and Simon's in-depth diagnosis was: "What you do is you water down the songs. … You make it lose its importance because you play around with it so much." Next, Andrew Garcia gave three of the four judges a bellyful of disappointment with James Morrison's "You Give Me Something." "Dog, honestly, that wasn't the vibe for you tonight," Randy told him. "The fact that you haven't managed to choose the right song in two weeks is becoming a problem," Simon agreed. Kara, meanwhile, said she felt Andrew simply "played it too safe." Ellen was the lone dissenter, saying she enjoyed the song despite "a couple of little pitch problems." Sixteen-year-old Aaron Kelly garnered mixed reviews with his take on The Temptations' "My Girl." "The first half of that song was brilliant," said an enthusiastic Randy. "I liked it," Kara agreed. Ellen, however, thought the song "was a little forgettable," and Simon thought the arrangement was "too old-fashioned" and "all over the place" to boot. Following that, Tim Urban sang "Come On Get Higher" by Matt Nathanson. Randy said, "I didn't really get it. It was kind of very karaoke for me." Ellen wasn't too high on the performance either: "There's no charisma, there's no stage presence," she leveled. Kara said she liked Tim's song choice, but also told him, "You didn't make it your own." Simon, surprisingly, gave Tim a glowing review: "I think that was a marked improvement on last week … I'm really impressed not only by your performance, but by your attitude and your work ethic." Finally, Lee Dewyze sang Hinder's "Lips of An Angel," and the judges agreed his performance verged on heavenly. "I think the song had a couple of pitch problems but I liked it," Randy complimented. Ellen agreed about the pitch issues, but "there was so much passion and intensity." Kara thought the performanced was a "big improvement" from the previous week, and Simon gave Lee the ultimate compliment: "Vocally … you are head and shoulders above everybody else on your side of the competition right now." Tune in to "American Idol" tomorrow night at 8 p.m. on FOX to see the 10 women semifinalists perform.[Read full story on The Insider]
