Obama: 'lipstick' Comment Not About Palin
Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama has denied that his controversial "lipstick on a pig" was any reference to Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin and accused John McCain's campaign of resorting to "lies and phony outrage." Speaking this morning at an event in Norfolk, VA, Obama said the Republicans created a "made-up controversy" by suggesting that his use of the phrase "lipstick on a pig" was a sexist against Palin. Obama also called for an end to personal attacks in the campaign so the candidates can focus on serious issues for "serious times." On Tuesday, Obama took a dig at his Republican presidential rival by comparing McCain to George W. Bush, saying McCain would not change Washington D.C. as promised. "You know, you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," Obama said. Palin famously joked in her RNC speech: "I was just your average hockey mom. I love those hockey moms, you know, they say, 'What is the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick.'" McCain's campaign has accused Obama of "smearing" Palin in "offensive and disgraceful" .[Read full story on The Insider]
Barack Obama's 'lipstick On A Pig' Comment Sparks Controversy
Barack Obama took a dig at his Republican presidential rival during a speech Tuesday, reportedly comparing John McCain to George W. Bush by saying McCain wouldn't change Washington D.C. as promised -- "You know, you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," Obama said. The Illinois senator's is now being taken by some critics as a potshot at McCain's VP pick Sarah Palin. Palin famously joked in her RNC speech: "I was just your average hockey mom. I love those hockey moms, you know, they say, 'What is the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick.'" Now, certain political figures are asking that Obama apologize to Palin for his "lipstick on a pig" . "It's disgraceful. Sen. Obama owes Gov. Palin an apology," former Massachusetts Governor Jane Swift said, according to the Associated Press, adding: "There's only one woman in the race. It's hard to think this was directed at anybody other than Gov. Palin." Obama's campaign responded that the Democratic presidential hopeful was citing an old adage, not referring to Palin. As it turns out, the Washington Post says that McCain used the expression last October when he reportedly said of Hillary Clinton's 1990s health care plan: "I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig."[Read full story on The Insider]
Mccain Scales Back Rnc
Sen. John McCain held a news conference late Sunday afternoon to announce that the RNC's opening day in St. Paul, Minn., will be scaled back dramatically as Hurricane Gustav heads toward the Gulf Coast. McCain and his campaign manager Rick Davis announced that the RNC will halt most of the convention activities that were slated for Monday, except those that are absolutely necessary. McCain said "it's time to open our hearts and our wallets to those citizens who are now in the shadow of a natural disaster." Earlier Sunday, President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney canceled their plans to speak at the convention Monday night because of the hurricane. McCain, who spoke from St. Louis, said he and his VP running mate Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin had been on hurricane watch as they toured the state emergency management center in Jackson, Miss., on Sunday. McCain also reportedly chartered a jet to fly home delegates of hurricane-threatened states along the Gulf Coast. The strom is expected to make landfall as early as Monday.[Read full story on The Insider]
Hurricane Gustav Storms Star Power At Rnc
Hurricane Gustav is taking major star power out of the Republican National Convention as it charges across the Gulf of Mexico and threatens to hit storm-weary New Orleans. The White House announced Sunday that President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney will not attend the RNC - slated for September 1-4 in Minneapolis-St. Paul - so they can deal with the hurricane situation. The threat of Gustav already caused the broadcast community to rethink its planned coverage of the RNC, which can be a ratings-grabber for the traditional networks and cable news. Network executives are now considering how coverage will change in the midst of the coming storm, as RNC organizers consider the future of the convention itself. Gustav dropped from a Category 4 to a Category 3 storm overnight, but forecasters warned it could gain strength from the gulf's warm waters before making landfall as early as Monday. "The Insider" will be front and center at the RNC, so keep checking back for more convention coverage.[Read full story on The Insider]
