Marshall is known for his obsession with basketball: his contract has often obligated studios to provide a basketball court on his film locations. Also known for the photo albums he makes on each of his movies, taking separate pictures of himself with every member of the huge cast and crew. Attended Northwestern University (Evanston, IL), where he has a building specializing in radio/television/film production named for him and his wife. Wrote for the Daily Northwestern sports beat while in college, advocating that NU drop out of the Big Ten athletic conference. Graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School in New York [1952] Career started as a comedy writer. Brother of Penny Marshall. Son of Anthony W. Marshall. Is afraid of heights. Son of Anthony W. Marshall and Marjorie Irene Marshall (née Ward), a dance instructor. Brother of Penny Marshall and Ronny Hallin (née Marshall). Father of Lori Marshall, Kathleen Marshall, and Scott Marshall. Three children: Lori, Scott, Kathleen - all actors who have appeared in several of Garry's films Uncle of Tracy Reiner, Penny Lee Hallin, Judy Hallin and Wendy S. Hallin.
