His band has had two Grammy nominated albums: "Under the Table and Dreaming" and "Before these Crowded Streets". Has appeared on VH1 Storytellers with guitarist/friend Tim Reynolds. Started and is the lead singer for the "Dave Matthews Band". Has two sisters (Anne and Jane) and a brother (Peter). His father worked for IBM. He was in several plays in 1990-1991 in Charlottesville, Virginia.
