Police and emergency vehicles arrived to CBS Television City in Hollywood moments ago ... after someone reported that white powder spilled out of a letter in the CBS mailroom.

Law enforcement sources confirm ... cops are investigating the scene.

Sources on the lot tell TMZ ... the letter was NOT addressed to anyone on "Dancing with the Stars" ... but so far, it's unclear who the intended recipient was. 

It's not the first time CBS has had an anthrax scare -- just last year, the studio went on lockdown when production staff found white powder in a letter addressed to Bristol Palin.

Officials also intercepted a threatening letter addressed to "Late Late Show" host Craig Ferguson just last month. The letter also contained white powder -- which was later determined to be cornmeal.




3:21 PM:The L.A. City Hazardous Materials team is on the scene.

4:00 PM: Crisis over. Law enforcement sources tell us the powder is a "non-harmful" substance ... but still unclear what it is.

Security at Craig Ferguson's "Late Late Show" didn't take any chances during last month's anthrax scare -- telling the 911 operator they immediately quarantined everyone who had contact with the white powder as soon as they could.

TMZ obtained a copy of the 911 call -- made by a very cool, calm and collected security guard who wasn't one of the five people exposed to the powder.

As we previously reported, a deranged fan put the powder in an envelope and mailed it to CBS Television City in L.A, along with a threatening letter -- but an investigation proved the powder was nothing more than cornmeal.

So far, no arrests have been made.

Kathy appeared on the New Years Eve special of "Anderson Cooper 360°," where she left people's ears ringing as she rang in 2010 live from Times Square. In a discussion about balloon boy, Falcon Heene, the comedian mispronounced the child's name using an expletive. She explained to Craig, "I was amused by how if you watch the worldwide coverage of that story, then you can hear his first name pronounced in many different ways and, in fact, his own mother has an accent and there were times that it sounded almost as if she pronounced the name of her own child Falcon as a verb that adult film actors use…" Though Craig tried to clarify if Kathy got fired from CNN, all she said in response was, "I don't think I have really done a job well until I get fired.
