Reuters - New "Tonight" show host Conan O'Brien got off to a roaring start in his first outing behind the desk vacated by Jay Leno last week after 17 years as America's favorite late night television chat show host.
Last night saw the return of Conan O'Brien, the foremost redheaded Irish talk show host over six feet tall. Armed with a new announcer (old sidekick Andy Richter), two A-list guests (Will Ferrell and Pearl Jam), and a few months to write new material, it was time to hit L.A... sort of.

Conan O'Brien officially took over for Jay Leno as the host of "The Tonight Show" on Monday night, and the funny man had a long way to go to get from New York to his new spot behind the "Tonight Show" desk. During the show's opening Conan is seen running from New York to California, and hitting up scenic and historic spots along the way such as Wrigley Field in Chicago, and the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. The audience gave the new host a warm welcome and Conan went into a monologue featuring jokes about himself, Hillary Clinton, Vice President Joe Biden, and his new life in Los Angeles. "At least we know the applause sign works," he jokes after his warm reception. "Ladies and gentleman this is a huge night for me. I remember watching Johnny Carson when I was a kid and thinking that's what I want to be when I grow up. I'm sure right now somewhere in America there's a little kid watching me thinking what is wrong with that man's hair?" After showing off the size of the stage Conan welcomed his first guest Will Ferrell. The actor was carried out by four men dressed as Egyptians holding a pharaoh's platform. "I didn't want to upstage you" Ferrell jokes. "I just wanted to come in low key, under the radar." Ferrell talked about his new movie 'Land of the Lost,' and also gave Conan some tips about things to do in Los Angeles. Before leaving the stage the actor sang his own rendition of "Never Can Say Goodbye," joking that although he's pulling for the new host he's not sure how long NBC will keep him around. Conan's "Tonight Show" debut ended with a performance by Pearl Jam. Watch "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" weeknights at 11:30 p.m. on NBC.

Jay Leno hosted his last episode of "The Tonight Show" on Friday evening, passing the torch to his final guest and successor, Conan O'Brien -- but not before poking some fun at celebs such as Jon and Kate Gosselin. In his opening monologue, Leno reflected on his 17-year run as "Tonight Show" host. "When we started this show, Jon and Kate were both eight," he joked. Then he brought out his last guest, O'Brien, who inherets "The Tonight Show" next Monday. "I just want to say, I couldn't be happier," Leno told O'Brien. "You were the only choice. You were the perfect choice. You have been an absolute gentlemen in private and in the press." "Conan rocks!" an audience member shouted out. Leno replied, "I agree, Conan rocks." Conan said he knew he had big shoes to fill, and cracked that eventually, "I want to try and fill little shoes. Some day I want to replace a local weatherman who's been on the air for about three months and who is no good and everybody hates." After looking back at some of his most popular "Tonight Show" skits over the years, Leno said his famous predecessor Johnny Carson taught him that "you always want to have jokes. And that’s what we've been trying to do for the last 17 years, make you laugh. And it's been an honor and a privilege to do that." At the end of the show, Leno raised a curtain to reveal the 68 children born to his staff over the 17 years. "So that's what I would like my legacy to be," he said. "When these kids grow up and they go, 'Hey, mom and dad, where do you guys meet?' They're gonna say they met on the stage of 'The Tonight Show.'" Leno returns to TV on a new primetime show on NBC this fall.

NEW YORK (AP) — Nearly two dozen guitars are scattered on the floor and sofa in Conan O'Brien's office in Rockefeller Center, most of them gifts from musicians like Eddie Van Halen, Los Lobos, Les Paul and Brian Setzer Orchestra.


Rock duo The White Stripes will perform together for the first time in two years as part of TV host Conan O'Brien's final Late Night show on February 20.


Singer Lisa Loeb married the music coordinator for "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," Roey Hershkovitz, in a Jewish ceremony Saturday night, held at a New York restaurant, the New York Times reports. The 40-year-old singer says she's keeping her maiden name -- Loeb is best known for her eight albums and No. 1 single "Stay (I Missed You)," which became a hit after being featured on the soundtrack for the film 'Reality Bites,' starring Winona Ryder and friend Ethan Hawke. In addition to working in late night television, Hershkovitz was also a producer on episodes of “The Office” -- he met his beautiful bride when he approached her to host a television pilot. Loeb says the two met several times after that and really started to hit it off.   “Little by little our timelines actually came together” she said. “And by the time we went to a friend’s wedding in Washington D.C., in October 2008 we began talking about our own wedding.”
