Kelly was injured when a borrowed motorcycle exploded in 1969. He was left with a paralyzed right arm and leg and speech problems. He has done little acting since the accident.

Best known for his portrayal of a perfect dad type as Porter Ricks on the "Flipper" TV series.

He is the son of Harry F. Kelly, served as governor of Michigan and as a justice on the Michigan Supreme Court.

His motorcycle accident reportedly forced him out of the lead role in 1971's "The Love Machine." (This casting had supposedly been approved by author Jacqueline Susann.) The lead role then went to John Phillip Law.
