Kelly was injured when a borrowed motorcycle exploded in 1969. He was left with a paralyzed right arm and leg and speech problems. He has done little acting since the accident.
Uncle of actor Brian d'Arcy James.
He is the son of Harry F. Kelly, served as governor of Michigan and as a justice on the Michigan Supreme Court.
He was only 16 years older than Luke Halpin, who played his son Sandy in "Flipper" (1964).
