Saved Frank Sinatra from drowning during the making of "None But the Brave" when an undertow pulled him from shore while swimming. When Dexter later advised him not to marry the then-20 year old Mia Farrow, Sinatra ended their friendship.
Son of Yugoslavian immigrants.
Met Karl Malden in the Army Air Force during World War II. Both performed in "Winged Victory," a Broadway film touring unit.
