Alexa - the 23-year-old daughter of 'Piano Man' singer Billy Joel and ex-wife Christie Brinkley - was rushed to hospital last month after reportedly taking an overdose of pills but has now said she plans to go back into education to study because she wants to help other young women who find themselves in the same position.
Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley’s musician daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, is speaking out following her hospitalization last month. “Hey Everyone!!! I just wanted to thank you all for the incredible outpouring of love and support. It's certainly been a whirlwind of a month, but reading all of your encouraging posts has never failed to cheer me up!!!” Joel blogged Thursday on her MySpace account. The 24-year-old singer/songwriter, who spent several hours at a New York hospital on Dec. 5 after reportedly consuming pills, went on to say that she has a number of “exciting new developments for the New Year.” “This includes new creative projects, and even more volunteer work in hopes to give back to the community and, most importantly, to help young girls with something I feel I know a GREAT deal about: Heartbreak-Related Depression. “Although it does not get much attention in our society, it is a very serious and painful condition that often gets "swept under the carpet". I hope to bring this topic more to light... “I'm even going back to school for Psychology in hopes to learn more about this and many other afflictions that many of us have had to face... after all, there's nothing more fascinating than the human mind and its respective conditions...”

Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley have released a joint statement about their daughter, Alexa Ray's recent hospitalization to "The Insider." Joel and Brinkley's statement, which criticizes the New York Post, reads: "Every parent can imagine the pain and anguish we face as parents of a daughter who is working to recover from the dangerous actions she took while suffering a devastating heartbreak. As much as we hate dignifying tabloid stories with a response, we feel we must set the record straight to protect our family. The story that ran in the New York Post on December 8th, and has been subsequently spread across the internet, is filled with vicious lies and attempts to smear our character and that of our beloved daughter. We ask the public and legitimate media outlets to please ‘consider the source’ and to not further exacerbate our daughter’s situation by repeating and legitimizing these false reports." Alexa Ray spent several hours at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York last Saturday after reportedly consuming pills.

The singer told Newsday on Saturday night that Alexa Ray was "going to be fine." A law enforcement official speaking on the condition of anonymity told the Associated Press that a friend of the 23-year-old singer dialed 911 from Alexa Ray's apartment and said Alexa Ray had consumed several pills.

The FDNY tells us they transported a female from the apartment to a Manhattan hospital because she wasn’t feeling well. The incident is still under investigation. A law enforcement official speaking on the condition of anonymity tells the Associated Press that a friend of the 23-year-old singer dialed 911 from Joel’s apartment and said Joel had consumed several pills.
